Woodbridge VA-Our Taxes Pay For Featherstone Wildlife Refuge But We Can't Use It

By

Most residents of Prince William County don't know that Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge even exists. However it does and has since 1970 when the first 164 acres with access to the Occoquan River were acquired. Now comprising 325 acres the property is still closed to the public. For reasons that no longer make sense.

With its location at the intersection of Occoquan and Potomac Rivers it would be an ideal spot for bird watching. Both Osprey and Bald Eagles nest there. Opening the property is also critical to the continuation of the Potomac National Heritage Trail. Fortunately the Occoquan National Wildlife Refuge just a few miles north of this property is open to the public so Northern Virginia residents are not completely cut off from enjoying the beauty of the Occoquan River area.

Meanwhile the Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge sits with no trespassing signs posted. Waiting for someone to realize it's value to recreation and education in Prince William County.

Cindy, this doesn't make sense, but then again not much of what the government does makes sense to me....go figure. Have a great weekend

Cindy:  I'm sure there's meant to be a great photo of Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge here, but all I see is text.

Another government fiasco in the making.  You would think after they finished the Rippon VRE station that they would have made this refuge accessible to the public.  A shame.

Gerry-it might have made sense when they first acquired the property but now with the bridge across the tracks for commuters it doesn't make sense that citizens can't acces the trail.

Pat-I suspect now they are dealing with a budget crisis that keeps making it accessible the issue.
