A Different Type of Cardinal

By
Real Estate Agent with REMAX Premier Realty - The Villages

I was just enjoying some of the great photos posted here on ActiveRain, and I thought I would go find one of my own that would not make it to a regular post.  Here is a little friend we met while on vacation in Hawaii a few years ago (I think the kids took 2,491 photos on that trip).  Yes, he is a Cardinal, but not the variety we find here in Connecticut!

Chris - I have NEVER seen such a bird!  I wonder what kind it actually is!  It always amazes me the different types of wildlife that present themselves in various parts of the country.

I believe that it is called a Red-crested Cardinal.  This particular picture was taken on the Island of Kauai, but we also saw them on the Big Island (Hawaii).

Wow, how truly interesting.  Amazing how they adapt to their environment.

Chris, At first when I saw it, it looked like a photo shop creation - a mix of a cardinal and a tufted titmouse, but wow it's a real bird!  Thanks for sharing.  Such exotic things on islands.

Gloria - I only wish I could be that good at photo shop!  He's a real bird through and through!
