Old NE Kansas City

The Old NE Kansas City was once home to many doctors and other prominent citizens. There are many inviting homes to appreciate in this area. Victorians in Old NE Kansas City

The Old NE was 'country' in the 1800's. When Dr. Tiffany built his castle in the Old NE section of Kansas City, the houses (and roads) now surrounding the home were not yet in existence.

By the 1920's, Kansas City was growing and more homes were being built in the sparser areas of town. By the 1930' and 40's, Kansas City needed even more housing so the farmlands and woodlands were developed around houses that once were outside of city limits. Houses like Tiffany Castle in the Old NE and the John Wornall House in Brookside.

The Old NE section of Kansas City was at one time known as 'Little Italy' and Mafia connections were strong. Frank R. Hayde wrote a book entitled The Mafia and the Machine if you'd like to learn more about the Mafia in Kansas City. As I understand it, Mr. Hayde received permission to publish the story up until a certain year.

Today, many of the firehydrants in the Old NE section are still painted the colors of the Italian flag. But time moves on and there are now many more cultures living and working in this part of Kansas City. There is an African Market and several interesting restaurants along Independence Ave. I will have to do a longer blog post on the Old Northeast in Kansas City someday but for now: Here are a few photos to give you just a bit of flavor:

Thanks for the pictures of old NE Kansas city Maria.  It reminded me tha KC has so many delights that the rest of the country doesn't know about.

It has more boulevard miles than any city in the world except Paris, more fountains than any city in the world except Rome.  Also, at least in 1974 when I organized a national meeting of medical physicists in KC, it had cleaner air than Honolulu.  Then you have the Nelson Art Gallery with the largest collection of Chinese art outside of China.  Kansas City is a great and cultural place to live . . . but let's not tell anybody!

Maria - I haven't been to Kansas City in many years.  My son was there a couple years ago, and was amazed.  He especially liked the arch.  The Tiffany house is gorgeous!

Tony, the Tiffany Castle in Kansas City is amazing! Glad you enjoyed the post!

Myrl, Kansas City is a well kept secret! Umm, I think the arch you're thinking of may be in St. Louis. Kansas City is known for its' fountains (more than any other city in the world except Paris) and its' boulevards (more than any other city in the world except Rome). Kansas City is known variously by the names 'City of Fountains', Cowtown and Gateway to the West (a spot of contention with St. Louis).
