Earth Sheltered Home Finds a New Steward

The terrific Earth-Sheltered home that I have been marketing in Prince William County went to closing today.  The owner who had bought the property in 1989 was sad to let it go but the new owner is going to be a great steward of the property.  Having been studying Earth-Sheltered homes for years he decided that if he ever found one that was close enough to commute to his job in DC that he would buy it.

Of course there isn't a style labeled "earth-sheltered" in the MLS but I regularly posted the home on Craig's list and there were two newspapers, the Potomac News and the Washington Examiner who featured the home.  He found the property on Craig's list, read the newspaper articles and knew he had to see the property.  When he came to the open house he sat down on the couch, stared up through the skylight and had all of us watch the clouds floating by.  It was obvious that he was hooked.  His agent wasn't sure what to make of it, the home inspector was mystified, the appraiser couldn't find any comps but in the end the home is his.

He plans to take the home the next level and install active solar panels that will make the home completely independent of the local utility companies (already on well and septic) and perhaps make a few dollars selling electricity back to the local cooperative.  This has been an interesting experience and a nice treat to be able to stray away from the normal cookie cutter neighborhoods in our area.

I wish him luck and look forward to keeping up with the next chapter of this unique home.

Cindy, what a great story about a really, really buyer specific home!

Someone told me about work being done on solar roofs in California (Stamford University, I think) that has a payback of only a couple of years.  They work really well if the roof picks up any southern sun.

Indeed an unusual home..... solar panels down here are used to heat most of our Florida pools, but that is about it-
