It's the little things...

Our Susan Mangigian has been doing Thankful Thursday posts for a while now. I’ve always read them, if only to snag a bit of that much needed optimism that permeates each and every one of them. It’s mostly the little things that make up the things to be thankful for in Susan’s posts. Her sweet cuddly puppy, JJ, the hugs of the kids, the sunspot or the strikingly beautiful cherry tree in her front yard. These posts have always made me wistful…

I’ve always had a hard time with the little things. Ever since I can remember, my mind always raced to the immediate or not so immediate imaginary future; I was always lousy at the present. Last week and change brought the little things into focus. My oldest, whom I still call baby D, came for a visit for a few days. First time we saw him since shipping him off to college. We laughed and hugged and D got all sorts of unprovoked and unannounced kisses.

The boys played catch and talked for hours. No wisdom was imparted that is going to help D succeed in school or in life. Nothing that was useful outside of everybody getting loved up, and Jon and I provisioning dinners that have always been D’s favorites, down to the mint and chocolate chip ice cream that no one else in the family likes. There is something about seeing your baby all grown up in his old stomping grounds… Something soft and fleeting, like monarch’s wings accidentally brushing against your shoulder on their journey to Brazil… I spent every second of the time D was here intimately and intensely aware of his presence. It’s the little things.

Here he is, with my favorite song, and though he screws up towards the end for not having played it in a while - it makes me happy to watch him move across those keys as if nothing else mattered. It's the little things.

A few days later, I found myself sick as a dog, unable to move as much as my little finger and feeling very much as if I had been drugged up, though I obviously was not. With a little help of Google, it turned out that I was suffering from a rather sever bout of anemia, which is not surprising given that mom battled it her whole life. My partner in crime, hubby and best friend went out and rounded up everything that had enough iron and B12 in it to make me whole, no matter how many different stores he had to hit or the expense, and nursed me with the utmost care for two days. The little one was dressed and ready for school every morning, dinners were cooked and dishes and laundry were done without so much as a whimper. It’s the little things… As I laid on a couch watching chick flicks that my boys usually have no interest in, I realized that for all its banality and day-to-day dullness, I have the most romantic life of anyone I know. My boys still think I am cool, and they are way past the age when they don’t know any better, and my husband is still madly in love with me for reasons I no longer want to decipher. Because today, it’s about the little things. Today, I feel lucky to be alive, and I am pretty sure this is the first time I’ve put that in print.

Kim - it's a bit late in the day, but glad I could help:-)  xoxo

Papa Jon - the piano was the last thing standing, unpacked. The rest of the little boopa's stuff was in boxes.  This was about five minutes to departure for college, and while it was taped for personal use only, I figured I'd share it just this once.

J-Mac - that she does, as do you, my friend.  How can one not like your little things things.  :-)

Well, Inna, my dear friend, this made me cry.   To be loved by your children and your husband, to hug dogs, to have friends, to have a dad who you can argue with and love at the same time (I so enjoy you two), to have a son who can play like that, two gorgeous sons, to be so damn smart and so darn pretty to look at.  These, my friend, are not little things.  These are the products of a life well lived.  I am thankful for you and your happiness.  I am thankful that you have a husband who adores you and two sons that are lucky to have you.  Little things, big things, life is made up of them and it is good!  I love you and thank you for "seeing" me.  That's not a little thing.  xxoo

OK now stop it.  You're gonna make me cry, cherie.  Nevermind that - you did make me cry.  It's your words, and your heart and D's beautiful music, and your ability to see and feel deeply, no matter - or maybe because of? - the risk that carries, and your otherworldly ability to write prose that touches and sparks and moves.  You're a blessing, Inna -- may you always be blessed. xoxoxo

What a great and optimisitc post about living in the here and now. I too, tend to look too far ahead at the expense of the present.  I needed a reminder that  I really live in the moment.  The video was great.  Debussy is not easy to play at all!

Inna, That you put it to print and video, was so touching. It would be great if we all took more time out of our ""dull" days to feel lucky to be alive.

Hi Inna, Love from your children and husband is a feeling that no word could describe for me, but it feels like no other! From listening to your video you have a talented son on your hands. We are opposite, in that it's always been the little things for me then having with a indirect glance on the future.

Glad to read you are doing better, a sublingual B-12 works well for me. Keep on enjoying the little things :~)

Great post. Thank you for sharing this insight into your life and your appreciation for your lovely family. To be loved so unconditionally like you are by your husband and sons makes your life a wonderful one indeed. Your son is such a talented pianist.

Sorry for the belated, everyone:-)

My Susan - it's always the soft glimmers of hope burried in the shadows under your reading chair or the warmth emanating from JJs kisses in my mind's eye that takes the edge off the big things and the big worries for me, where I can occasionally enjoy the luxury of getting to know the little things.  It's still a rare luxury, but I am learning.  XOXO-

Tanya - I am told making people cry is my specialty:-)  But you do speak and think too highly of me, my dear.  It would be great to be all that...maybe. I am working on just being ok with being me at the moment.  MWA- and thank you!

Ruthmarie - thank you.  I am rarely optimistic in print.  As for D's music choices - he's always gravitated to difficult, if it were pretty enough and if he could play it his own way, and preferrably learn it by ear.  He still hates reading music and is lousy at it. I am just thrilled that he got to take his piano with him and gets to play it on occasion now.

Dick - always good to see you here, and thank you.  I am hoping that one day we'll simply discover that time itself is relative to how intensely we experience its movement....

Cynthia - I so envy your natural predisposition to living in the present.  I have to make deliberate excursions into it.... Thanks for the B-12 advice.  :-)

JoAnn - thank you, and yeah - D is pretty talented, if I may say so myself.

Petra - they do matter the most, i just wish i had my eyes open more to see them and to revel in them as they happen.  I used to always chide my hubby when we'd be out an about and he always had his camera on and was taking photos.  It seemed that he couldn't ever enjoy just being some place, not until he looked at the photos afterwards.  I do that without the benefit of postfactum pictures to reconstruct the magic of the experience or the warmth of feeling. Hugs back at you!

My son is a sophomore in college and I just got to visit him at school last year.  My hard ride in Dallas had me away from home and family for most of 8 months.  I loved listening you D, no longer Baby D (guys hate that when their mom's continue nicknames outside the home).  He seems like a great kid. Thanks for sharing.

what an amazing job you and Jon have done with your two sons.  that speaks louder than any accolade could ever represent.  and...what an incredible piano player.  my freshman daughter is in her 5th year of playing the viola and it's fun to listen to her progress year after year.  There is something about music that can really bring a family closer together.  And...is that an animated gif header?  Very cool.  Can you put embedded links in them?

Larry - My D actually loves being called baby D.  He is a soft squishy kiddo, when it comes to that - always has been. Can't imagine not being able to see him for as long a stretch as 8 months...  You are a braver man than I. :-)

Chris - D would have done so much better with his music if he ever bothered to actually learn to read it.  It was always so easy for him to pick stuff up by ear, that he never saw the value in the actual notes on a piece of paper in front of him.  So, paradoxically, if he were less talented - he'd be a better pianist:-)  Thanks for the header compliments, man.  Jon's idea - of course.  If AR allowed flash, we could embed links.  GIFs don't have that capability.

Russell - thank you, thank you!  Oh, and on the header - it's a stop motion animation Jon concieved of, rendered as a GIF anim.  :-)  Sort of like old-school cartoons were done.

Hi Inna!  This is such a wonderful post--what a beautiful family you have!  Talented, good looking and having 'smarts' are all incredible traits but, the love that you all share is something that can't ever be taken away.  It's something that you can cherish, rich or poor.  I enjoyed the music but, your words definitely moved me to tears.   You are an amazing woman with SO much to offer the world!  I just ADORE you!

Have a wonderful week--oh, sorry I'm so late to reading this post--I'm WAY behind!
