St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Charleston, SC was built around 1872, holds the distinction of having the tallest steeple in the state of South Carolina: 255 feet. The congregation was formed around 1840, at a time when German immigrates were arriving in Charleston. St. Matthew's was officially called "The German Evangelical Lutheran Chruch of Charleston".
