The Coburg Cow at Halloween - Charleston, SC

The Coburg Cow at Halloween - Charleston, SC

Just ask anyone living in the West Ashley area of Charleston, SC about the The Coburg Cow !! She is one of Charleston's most popular characters and definately a famous landmark.   She has been around since late 1920's and known to survive several storms:  Hurricane Hugo (1989), The Citadel Cadets trying to ride her (1992), and City of Charleston Board of Zoning (2001).

She was taken to shelter before Hugo struck, she was restored after the run-in with the Citadel Cadets, and she has been granted a zoning variance by the City of Charleston.

Located at 901 Savannah Highway, we at AgentOwned Realty are proud to have her as our across-the-street neighbor.

Today, she is sporting  her Halloween attire.

Trick or Treat from the Coburg Cow !

Thank-you Myrl.....the tomato sounds cute....do you have a spinning tomato that you can dress up ?  Coburg is a dairy, but moved it's location.  When it did, the city tried to remove the signage, the cow.  Citizens protested...and the cow got the variance.  And that's a true story !!

William, I'm glad you found this entertaining.  "The Cow" is located across the street from my real estate office, and just by chance I saw it today...and made the post.  The Cow has an expression for most holidays.  Thanks.

Good Morning Joye, What a GREAT story about Coburg Cow and your towns dedication to the great, great, great grandmother cow of Charleston, SC! She looks so cute in her striped stockings, coat and hat! What a role model that cow has been and wouldn't it be something to find out how many photos have been taken over the years of her looking over the city of Charleston! What a hero!!!

Joyce, that's a cow that has earned R-E-S-P-E-C-T!  :)

Why, when it comes right down to it, I'm willing to bet she's been photographed more times than your SC Beauty queens! AND people STILL love her - all of her - height - weight - and what she represents! With or without her clothes, she hasn't changed a bit!!!

WHAT A COW!

Joye,

It's nice to have a little local history icon like that. Like the costume. :)

Joye, I love the Coburg Cow.  We used to go to West Ashley to the Woodcraft Store until it closed.  I knew the cow was there and it was our landmark for finding the store.  I was always too busy looking at the cow to realize AgentOwned was across the street until our last trip to the store before it closed.  Great photo and history.  Very moooooooooving info!  Sorry had to add that.  Maddie would love this cow!
