Black CASea bass season reopened on Monday, November 1st and will go through December 31st. Many area party-boats, including Carolyn Ann III out of Barnegat, went jigging for striped bass yesterday afternoon with a handful of customers. They caught bass to 23 pounds and large bluefish.

The black sea bass is a type of Grouper found more commonly in northern than in southern ranges as it inhabits the entire East Coast. They can sometimes be found in inshore waters like Barnegat Bay and off The Jersey Shore in waters up to a depth of 425 feet. They spend most of their time close to the sea floor and are often congregated around bottom formations such as rocks, man-made reefs, wrecks, jetties, piers, and bridge pilings.

Black sea bass are highly sought after by recreational and commercial fisherman, and thus can be over-fished. Quotas have been set to help limit the over-fishing of black sea bass.  Recreational black sea bassblack sea bass on The Jersey Shore has a possession limit of 25 fish per day and a minimum size of 12.5 inches.

Karl - Nice write up on black sea bass & striper. My husband is thrilled that the black sea bass season has reopened and if we are lucky (weather permitting) we will get in a few more trips on the boat before it stored for the winter. I personally prefer to catch striper, but black sea bass becomes one of my favorites on the dinner table. I will have to try that recipe. Thanks for sharing.

Karl,

Thanks for reminding me that the black sea bass season is happening. I sure have been missing the fluke season, especially since it's been shortened.  Ahh, but I really like black sea bass, great taste, but a little tricky to catch. Thanks Karl!
