Poppies

This remembrance day please take the time to not only remember and appreciate the soldiers who have fought and are still fighting for our freedom, but also try and find the time to go and shake the hands of these people who have fought for our freedoms.

Make a point of stopping and talking to our veterans, young or old, and let them know we appreciate the sacrifice they made for us. You might be surprised just how much this experience will enrich your own life.

*In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
WE SHALL NOT SLEEP,
THOUGH POPPIES GROW
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.

Chris, so many brave men and women gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today. The sad part is that as the veterans pass on, their stories are lost, and I'm just not sure the youth of today really understand the sacrifices these people endured. Thanks for the post.

Good remembering and I forgot how beautiful that poem was.

Matthew, it must have been about eight or so years ago, but I got to talking with a WWII vet at the legion in between games of darts... that night enriched me forever... this person, who quite easily blended into the background had lived such a rich life, full of experience and was, I found out, a real hero....

Thank you Liz

Yes Chris, talk to the veterans, TALK TO them. Have you ever looked into their eyes? They tell so much. Just watch as you walk up to them how their expression changes and watch their eyes light up. We can all spare a few moments of our time for them, can't we? We hope so.

It’s always easy to thank a veteran or an active military person since we have so many here in San Diego. What has always puzzled me is the number of homeless people holding signs saying that they are veterans. My uncle was a veteran of the very unpopular Vietnam war, and the U.S. Government took very good care of him.
