plug outletPhantom electrical usage is the term coined for elctrical usage by appliances when not in use. Unplug your appliances and electronic devices from power outlets and save money on your electric bill and save a significant amount of energy.  Some energy wasters in people's homes are the chargers of cell phones, digital cameras, music players, and power tools. Unplug these adapters and electronics (televisions, DVD players, computers, microwaves, lights, entertainment systems, toasters and blenders) after using them.

These chargers and appliances draw power whenever they're plugged into an outlet, regardless of whether the appliance is fully charged or even connected.

If you unplug just ONE major appliance when not in use, you could save upto twenty dollars a year. Think how much you could save if you unplugged all of them! There are extensions and adapters available that elimate phantom usage when appliances are turned off, consider them if unplugging is difficult or inconvenient.

Chris, I first heard this term "phantom electrical use" several years ago when working with a top notch green builder. He stopped me in my tracks and said, "What's phantom about it?" It's real - you are wasting money. This is particulalry importnat in our area around Philadelphia for homes served by PECO. Deregulations beginning 2011 means use increase in our utiliites cost. This is a great way to save.

Its true Chris when we look around our home and see the number of electrical items we have plugged in that we do not even use or look at.  Your right the savings would add up.
