A Veterans Day Follow-up: Book Recommendation Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell

By

I used to read books, tons of books.  Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell As life gets busier and busier, my reading is mostly confined to the daily newspaper, magazines and online articles.

However, once in a while I'll hear about a book I need to read.  Lately, it's almost ALWAYS nonfiction, and so is the latest.

The book is Lone Survivor by U.S Navy Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell.  The author is a Navy SEAL, arguably one of the most elite military fighting men in the world (NOTE:  I'm ex-Navy, so I might be a little biased).

If you read this book, you'll leave with a thorough understanding of how SEALs become SEALs, what we're up against in Afghanistan, and you'll know just what a TRUE HERO is.  In fact, you're going to meet a whole bunch of heroes, and I don't use the word HERO lightly.

The story isn't full of happy endings for these elite warriors, and this first person account will bring tears to your eyes many times as you read about bravery, professionalism under intense attack, and sacrifice for one's comrades.  Four warriors against hundreds of enemy Taliban fighters, battling every step.

If you can find the time to read this book, it WILL be worth your time.  I couldn't find it at my local Barnes & Noble in stock, but it was online at Amazon.com.

Keep Remembering!
Bill

I wil post this recommendation on my FaceBook Fan Page for The Preferred Title Group. Inc.

I am trying to post something daily through the month of November in honor of our Vets.  We should never forget  the sacrifices that each Veteran and every member of every Veteran's family give to our country.

Charlene, Thanks for the additional message spread!  It's an awesome book and helped me get a much better understanding of what we're fighting there.

Will, Definitely worth the time.

Roger, If you get the chance, it is a great read.

I've read hundreds of war stories since 1970, and a few before. Lately I've been slowing down but when one gets a recommendation, I make a point to check it out. Thanks.

BLiz - Even though I'm not military, I most certainly respect and admire the sacrifices and the risks that our service men and women make for our protection.  As for reading, you're singing to the choir, my friend.  I used to read a lot too and would sometimes have two books going.  These days, I may still have a book going but it takes me sooo much longer to get through it.  Right now, I'm reading Third World America by Arianna Huffington and seems to be taking me forever to get through it.

Glenn, Glad to point you to a good one, and this one is more recent history than most.

Melissa, I'm sure he'll appreciate it.  I'm not sure anyone in the military will enjoy it...the subject matter is too grim, but they'll certainly have a sense of pride and respect for these warriors.

Donne,  I have one book I haven't touched in about five years.  I find myself mostly reading American History or biography when I do read, but mostly it's quick reads.  The exception is any Tom Clancy Jack Ryan related book, but I think he's done with those.

This sounds like a great Christmas gift idea for my son.  I tend to read fiction, myself.  But I think with his background, it's right up his alley.  Thanks for the recommendation!

Tish, As a Navy diver, he'll probably appreciate the story.  Probably some overlap between the SEAL training and his dive training.

Bill, I always loved to read....I had a phase when "no time" to read as well, then I realized you just have to make time, just like blogging, commenting etc. Ever since I learned to be disciplined in time blocking I am back to reading. Now to your comment no you are not biased. When I went to Ranger School there were three Navy SEALS, whenever we were punished and had to do 'push ups' if the instructor gave us 50 extra they gave voluntarily another 25:)))

Endre, You've had more direct experience with the SEALs than I have.  I had a LCDR (O-4) who taught Mechanical Drafting at Annapolis.  Started every class with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance (regulations be damned).  A fair, quiet man, but you knew underneath there was something NOT to be messed with.

After reading the book, 75 push ups was warm up work for those guys :)

It was unbelievable how much battlefield damage these guys took and STILL kept taking the fight to the enemy.  That force of will was incredible.  The book doesn't lay it out clearly...maybe it happened after publication, but the LT in charge there won the Medal of Honor posthumously, and the three enlisted all awarded the Navy Cross (two were posthumous).

Bliz my book and reading has grown out of control.  It now seems I'll never get to it, but I'll keep piling them up.  My cousin who retired from the military used to say that we "just don't know how real the threat is."  When you said "what we're up against in Afghanistan" that just put me in mind of my cousin.  Hopefully the book will bring us close to really understanding.

Charita, Somehow missed the comment this morning. Email notifications have been a little glitchy.  And yes, there's probably a lot that goes on with the military we never know about, and probably better off not knowing so we can sleep at night.  The book gave me a much better understanding of the long tribal history and the interactions, and just how severe the terrain is.  Perhaps not so hard to understand why bin Laden has been so hard to track.

Judi, Really good, and under $9 in paperback on Amazon (assuming you buy enough other stuff to get the free shipping!).

Liz & Bill I had to drop in again, did you see there was a Medal of Honor Ceremony for a Soldier who was alive? How rare is that, since you commented above about the (posthumous awarding of the Medal)
