Farming with foursquare?

Foursquare

Yup, farming with foursquare!

So we farm neighborhoods by sending mailers, newsletters, giving out pumpkins during Halloween, flags for the fourth.  We doorknock the neighborhood to meet the neighbors.  We send just listed and just solds to gain more mindshare...  We visit garage sales and walk the neighborhood on Saturdays to meet the neighbors that we never get a chance to meet.

So how the heck would foursquare play into this?  I mean foursquare.  The location based microblogging social media site.  www.foursquare.com.  Where so many of us are using it to check in places and get awarded badges for eating, sleeping, shopping, etc...

Yes, location based, microblogging.  The one where you check in places to get points...  And if you check in to a particular place more than anyone else you can become the mayor of that location...  Which means that anyone else that checks in to this location after you arYes, when someone else checks in to a location that you are the mayor of, they see you.e the mayor, they all see your name and picture when the check in.  FoursquareSooooo...  Let's think about this for a second.  If you are farming 500 homes in neighborhood that also has a dry cleaner, a pizza joint, an insurance office, a taco bell, a hardware store and nail salon...  If you check in to these places more than others, YOU will become the mayor of that location.  With a little effort you can become the mayor of ALL locations in your farm.  So that when any of the members of your farm use foursquare and check in to their neighborhood businesses, you will appear as the mayor, lending another way to touch your clientele. (People who use foursquare check in to all locations that they visit, and they enjoy doing it).

So what I mean is, use foursquare to enhance the farming you are doing right now...  5 million or so foursquare users...  The ones that use it will have a connection with you...  The ones that do not use it won't care either way.  But at least you can make a difference with some.  Second: Friend request all that have visited the local businesses, to increase your sqhere of influence.

So here is a new way to enhance your farming!  Do you use it?  What benefits are you having?

I hadn't heard of foursquare prior to tonight, and can't help but wonder what their traffic looks like... then divided by the total number of communities or neighborhoods in the U.S.

The mayor...sounds like farmville...lol  I did not know that about FourSquare.  Being in California, you folks are always on the cutting edge...it will be years until it is a big deal here.  I do know that two folks I follow on FB are big users but they are 20 something and very techy though.

Hi Chris,

Great suggestion and way to think outside of the box.  I haven't used Foursquare, but now I might give it a try.  I suggested this for a feature because of the originalilty of your thinking!

Hey Chris,

I remember you talking about this in your Social Media class. It really kind of scared me.

But now that I have really jumped in the the Social Network thing I am going to try it. Do you

really NEED to be at the places you check into? Or can I just check in??

Thanks! I always love your quick easy to follow advise!

Ok I signed up to foursquare, still seems scary and complicated? I will keep working on it.

Shannon - Great job on grabbing the bull by the horns!!!  Most places that you check into, you can be maybe less then 200 yards away to check in...  Just check the locations tab on your smart phone.  If you are close enough, you will be able to just check in...  but beware!  Foursquare is allowing the "manager" or "owner" of the location see where the mayor has been checking in from...  And if it appears they are cheating, they can take away the mayor-ship from you.

But let me back up...  how many business owners even know this?  Not very many, usually starbucks and places like that.  So while it is in its infancy, get on out there and check in!!!  :)

Chris, I'm on FourSquare and am the mayor of my house and a couple of other places.  I'm not sure I want the random people I could friend to know where I am all the time, especially when I'm at home or at places for my family.  Still, I think you're right - it could be a useful social media tool.  The biggest stopper for me is that I forget to check in when I arrive somewhere!

Wende - Well, you don't have to alert the world where you check in.  You can NOT SHARE it with your FS friends.  So you still get the points, and the mayor credit.  Just not alerting where you are.  :)
