The Firespike-a beautiful Florida plant loved by hummingbirds and butterflies

New Port Richey, Florida - I wanted to share with you one of our favorite plants.

Firespike plant - Toni Weidman

The Firespike will grow and bloom in shady areas in which few other blooming plants can. The red tubular flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. They’re also known as Cardinal Guard and Scarlet Flame.

It can be grown as a container plant but if you have room for one, plant it in the ground, the sun shining on the blossoms makes them look like they are on fire, and the their large glossy leaves make for a beautiful plant.

This one was twice the size last fall but we had several freezes in winter that killed off a lot of our plants. The Firespike didn’t die but we had to cut it back almost to the ground so it could re-grow. The plant is native to Central America.

They propagate by underground sprouting but are easily controlled by cutting back on the new growth coming from the ground. Deer do love the taste of them and will eat them; although ours has never been chewed on by our deer. (They like my Hibiscus better).

Toni,

That is such a nice looking plant.  I love to watch hummingbirds and the butterflies.  I once saw a hummingbird at one of the flowers in my flower box.  It was so neat.  They are so tiny and their wings go so fast.

Hi Brigita - I agree; we have babies during the late summer and fall and they are even tinier. So cute.

I love to watch the aerial show when a couple of hummingbirds are 'sharing' the same feeder. Bright red seems to be the color that attracts them the most.

Yes, that's true, John. And the aerial show is usually a "territorial" show. They are very aggressive little guys/gals.

Toni - I have a client with several plants in their yard and they hummingbirds do love it.  I saw [for the first time] the birds eating from the flowers, I'd only seen them eat from feeders in the past.

Beautiful!
