On a bluff in Bandon... a Kodak Moment

In July of 2006 I was traveling through Oregon for work. I drove down from Seattle for a day in Roseburg then over to the coast to Coos Bay via Highway 42. What a beautiful drive it is through Tenmile, Camas Valley, over the mountains through Remote, then Myrtle Point, and Coquille. After my day in Coos Bay I’ll be off to Grants Pass and Medford.

My friend and coworker Candis met me in Bandon that morning so I could visit the branch office. After the meeting we jumped into her car so she could show me some of the sites. I was on a pretty tight schedule so it was a whirlwind tour to be sure. I had never been to Bandon before then and I fell in love with it immediately. We drove along Jetty Road then through a small neighborhood to the end of the street. I jumped out of the car. We were high up on a bluff looking over the coastline at the ocean and the view was absolutely breathtaking.

I stood there for a moment and took it all in as best I could, snapped off a few pictures then jumped back in the car. Little did I know at the time (until I was back home in Seattle) that this was the Kodak Moment and one of the best photos of the trip. I was so moved by this scene. I love the symmetry of earth tones. The wild flowers in the foreground giving way to green along the bluff, the way the ocean layers its waves up to the sandy beach punctuated with those big rocks, and the background that transforms the ocean blue through wispy clouds into sky.

I claim no expertise or skill taking this shot. I didn't have any time to plan or think. It was one of those rare and wonderful accidents. A gift. Oregon was part of my territory from 2003 through 2009 and I always had my camera with me. Those were great times and I am blessed with many fond memories.

Great photo!  The first time that I drove along the Oregon Coast I felt as if I had to get out at almost every viewpoint since the scenery was so spectacular.  A few years later, my wife and I moved to Eugene (Go Ducks!) and we try to get to the Coast on as many summer weekends as possible.  We were in Bandon over the Fourth of July weekend a few years ago.

A busy weekend, I've been catching up on chores today...

Brian... Thanks, and thanks for stopping by. You should come up and see our part of the country, I'm sure you'd like it. August, September is probably the best guarantee for sunshine!

Rick: Thank you. I understand your feelings for sure. I wanted to do the same. I had a lot of miles to travel and little time in between. So it had to be quick stops. I wish now, I would have made it a 2 week trip, then I'd could of taken a days off between appointments for photography.

Glenn: Talk about stumbling into the perfect moment. A beautiful summer late morning just before noon. It was already about 82 with just a slight breeze off the ocean. The smell of the wild flowers, the salt air, wow... it was magical.

That is an awesome picture! Sometimes it is the "snapshot" that becomes the best shot of the trip. Great shot!

Rene' - When I first looked at that beach, I thought for certain it was a scene I had shot a few years agom near Half Moon Bay, California.  Your picture is better than mine however.

Myrl... I hadn't thought about it, but you are right... It does look a lot like Half Moon Bay, I haven't been there in 20 years but I have some pictures... Like I said, this pic was lucky! :o)

Thanks so much Marchel... actually it is. I got a poster size print from Costco that turned out really good and framed it. It's in my dining room.
