KODAK Moment - Wood Bridges That are Vanishing From Madison County KY

As I was looking for one of my favorite pictures to enter into the Kodak Moment contest, I found this favorite moment that I had one summer day in Madison County KY.

I had been out touring homes with a client near US 25 in Richmond and after I drove across this wood bridge I stopped to take a few pictures for later. Good thing I did.

Now this bridge is gone. Yes, it's not even there now. Hard to imagine that something this beautiful is gone.   Most of the wooden bridges I remember seeing all my life in Madison County have vanished.

Over the years, I have taken pictures of old stores, bridges and buildings all around Madison County and Richmond. I'm always sad to see that now they are gone too. That's progress, I guess.

Right now in Central Kentucky, we are experiencing extremely cold weather. Last night snow and today a freezing rain.  Brrrr! This picture makes me have hope that we will be warm again.

It's rare to experience all this snow and cold before Christmas. My mother commented yesterday that it reminded her of the weather back in the 50's and 60's. I do remember seeing old pictures of us kids playing in lots of snow. Maybe she is right.

I wonder if this has anything to do with global warming?

This is a great photo. There is only one like this I am aware of in Cedarburg WI and they name a a street after the bridge. You guessed it, Covered Bridge Road.

That is soooo cool.  There are a few around my area in Pasco, I should go grab pics of them.  It would make really cool artwork in the office.  in fact....how about you mail this one to me.........  Pretty Please!

Here is my Kodak moment, taken with a Blackberry...not quite the same quality, I love your picture.

What a beautiful bridge!  All that greenery does give us hope!  I can hear the clop clop of tires driving across it!

Hi Lizette, now that is a nice wood bridge. It's ashame it's gone. Madison County really should restore bridges like that one instead of replacing them if they can. Sometimes that is impossible due to the age of the bridge.

Lizette,

Wasn't that the name of the movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep? Bridges of Madison County?

Beautiful photo of a time now gone.   KY is so beautiful,  just like TN.   And you still have the ferry.

Lizette--I relate to the wooden bridge as one in my area was torched by young vandals recently.  It is sad to see a part of our past disappear..  I am glad that you were able to take a photo prior to its demise.

Merry Christmas.

Have you ever been up by Flemingsburg to see the covered wooden bridges up there.  Someplace, I have some pictures of some of them.  Pretty neat stuff.  Too bad that one's now gone.

Hi Lizette,

I can relate to changes in the landscape and how it effects us. I'm thinking too about the environment and landscape in general. I moved to a rural area to have a lifestyle with lots of trees and trails to ride my horse. The last 18 years has changed so much, that the trails are not accessible and more and more homes are taking up the natural areas.

It is a mixed feeling to see this happening for sure. A lot of the residents care about their freedom of how to use their own land, while others are more conservative about land use.

Let's just hope we don't forget about taking care of the environment for the long term. Even a wonderful old bridge has value beyond its functional use... GREAT PHOTO!

Lizette - It is so sad that these landmarks are disapearing from the local landscape.  Aren't you glad that you have a photographic record.  I hope that some are being preserved.
