Can homeschooling and a home based business co-exist?

Can homeschooling and a home based business really co-exist? One of the questions I’m asked by many of my clients is how I’m able to juggle having 3 children that are all being homeschooled and having a business that is primarily run out of my home via my home office.

Homeschooling and the home business

Well, to be honest, it is easier than you think. One of the things I do is have a separate office that is set aside for my business. We use the dining room table for our school and the office for business. We have a rule in my house that if the office door is closed, daddy is doing business. The kids respect this and always knock before entering.

Now, unlike traditional school where the kids are locked in a classroom from 8am-3pm, we can usually be done with school by 1pm and the kids have their homework done by 3pm. This clearly leaves a lot of free time for the kids. What do we do with that free time? We get our kids involved in sports, girl scouts, boy scouts, and church activities. (This is how we make sure our kids are getting the social skills that people are always saying homeschool kids don’t get)

Now, one thing that my kids get to experience that public school kids don’t is they understand what I do and how hard I work. Public school kids, if they are lucky, get one day a year on “Bring your kid to work day” to figure out what their parents do. Mine not only understand what I do, they are learning valuable business building skills along with negotiation skills when they listen to me on the phone. (Unfortunately my kids use these skills against me if they want something – lol)

Has my business suffered because of having my family at home? NO! Has my family suffered because of having my business at home? NO! Will my family thrive when they are ready to go out in to the world because we homeschool and have a home based business? WITHOUT A DOUBT! Check out this article about homeschooled kids vs public school children and ask yourself, “What are my kids going to do in the world?” Homeschooling Proving "Good for America"

If you are wanting to know more about homeschooling and running your business from home, then don’t hesitate to give me a call, I would love to show you how it can be done and you will have a stronger business and family for it!

Having homeschooled my kids their whole lives (my daughter graduates in May), I can tell you they have a better understanding of what work is and don't lack in social skills at all.  You won't be sorry you did this. I've never regretted a moment.

While my children have attended private and public schools, many families in our area choose to home school their kids and I had at least three clients this year who did so. One thing we learn from each other is that academics is only a small part of their education. Even as little guys, mine spent many hours at job sites, helped with mailing projects, and now as teenagers they both help with staging. My son is learning photoshop (at school) and can do a beautiful job with excel spreadsheets and charts when I need reports. No matter what they end up doing in life, they understand that work is a necessary part of life. I would say that having parents who choose to include thier kids in all aspects of their lives makes all the difference.

I homeschooled my youngest daughter for several years in my early Real Estate days.  I sent her to school when she wanted to play softball since our homeschool group had no team.  I was always a hands-on learner myself and enjoyed taking her out for field trips that taught so much more than books ever could.  She is now grown up and about to graduate from University of Hawaii but I still look back on the homeschool days with joy.   You've chosen wisely.

Todd, as the others have also shown there is nothing lacking with a home schooled child...you are fortunate to be able to do it and for them to know you & your wife better for it...best

Sounds like you run a tight ship Todd.  As long as you have it planned out and stick to it, things will run smoothly.

Todd, you're question reminds me of all the times we get asked... can a husband and wife really work together in a business?  My answer ~ obviously we can, we've been married 37 1/2 years and working together over 25 of them!!!

All the best to you and your family as you work and play together!  Much success in your endeavors!

Here's to a fabulous New Year!

What a neat post!  Those who think that home-schooled kids don't get social skills obviously don't know many home schooled kids!  The ones I have met are some of the neatest kids!  Well mannered, smart and definitely have social skills in spades!  Good for you to have worked out such a great system for your family!  All the best for 2011!
