New Year's Resolution: Creating New Habits

As the New Year, 2011, unfolds, many of us are still perfecting or defining what our 2011 goals and resolutions will be, including new habits we want to acquire and old habits we want to dispense with.

A habit, as defined by Dictionary.com, is: an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary.

My personal reference point on this particular topic is the 30 blogs in 30 days challenge, which inspired me to get re-connected to ActiveRain.  The bonus of additional points certainly was an incentive, however, I still had to blog daily for 30 days, which seemed insurmountable at the time.

I met the challenge, and now, find I cannot start my day without commenting on 10 blogs, and writing a daily blog post - sometimes I even write TWO blog posts per day!

This has become, as defined above, a habit. I typically do my AR input in the AM, but find time to do it in the PM if my schedule does not permit the AM, or, if I simply cannot find something to blog about.

It's really that simple: regardless of what your resolution/goal/habit is you want to change/delete/add, you need to start with day one, and create a easy-to-stick to plan, set yourself up to win, and get to the 30 day point. Once you are there, it's become ALMOST involuntary, and it's much easier to stick to than to avoid.

Another piece of advice: it's easier to work on one or two things, rather than give yourself a huge task list of changes you want to implement now.

A way to set yourself up to win: if, for example, a healthier way of eating is your goal, and you have a print version of what you need to eat, copy it and carry a copy with you, put one in your car, one at the office, and one at home. This way, you have no excuses to wander from what you want to accomplish.

This technique can work for any goal/resolution you have, if you just apply the "set yourself up to win" mind set.

Happy New Year & Good Luck!

Carol:  That damn 30 in 30 caused my addiction too.  This year I gave myself allowance not to blog every single day.  We will see....

I have just reconnected back to AR after taking about a year off due to many, many things going on including my daughter's wedding.  Now that I am back in the saddle, I love getting my feet wet again and hopefully can form that addictive habit as well.  All the best and thanks for the great reminders on how to achieve the goal .. breaking it down and being visual.

I have some time consuming habits that I need to change for the new year. One of my good habits that I plan to continue is daily walks through my neighborhood with a camera in hand.

Happy New Year from your friend in Maryland!
