It may surprise some that a real estate broker would not jump at the opportunity to show a home.  However, realtors have a Code of Ethics that guide our relationship with the public and each other.  Mr. Iarossi did it exactly right

Hi Rich. I found you on the internet and was wondering if you could show us some homes this weekend? We already have a Realtor but she’s going to be away.

ANSWER:

The short answer is going to be no, but let me explain a little bit. First, Realtors abide by a Code of Ethics and it could be a violation of that Code if I showed you homes, knowing that you're already working with an agent. Second, Realtors don't get paid by the hour, we only get paid a commission, when a house sells. I can only assume that if I showed you a house, and you wanted to write an offer, you would do that with your current agent.

Let me offer a couple of solutions to your problem though. If your agent is out of town, check to see whether they've made arrangements for another agent to cover their business. That agent can certainly show you homes, in lieu of your actual agent. If not, you can call the manager of the brokerage that your agent works at, and ask them to provide somebody to show you homes.

Last, there are some instances where you can call the listing agent directly and they would be glad to show you their listing. This case is a little different since they also have an obligation to the seller to make sure the home is sold.

Yes, this happens quite often.  It seems that buyers neglect to understand that they should only deal with their agent rather than jumping around looking at homes with any agent they can find on the spur of the moment.

Good suggestions outlining our ethical obligation not to step on an existing relationship with another Realtor® unfortunately, if that Realtor® is unable to service their customer, it puts the customer in a quandry. Most often, they will keep calling until they find another agent who is willing to work on the customers schedule.

Good post - I have had other buyers call me and ask similar questions - they are not always as upfront to mention they have an agent, so in reality, they are "cheating" on their first agent.  Part of it is the instant gratification fix that exists in our society.
