.) Call the fire department. You may not need them, It's better to be safe than sorry; by the time it becomes apparent that you do need them, it will be too late.

.) Try to slow or stop the fire by depriving it of oxygen. In an airtight stove this is relatively simple: close all draft controls. In a stove that is not airtight, this won't put the fire out, it may cut the intensity of it down.  In a fireplace, you can cover the opening with a piece of plywood or similar material, but beware of strong suction created by the chimney fire. A wet blanket can be used buy being draped over your fireplace screen to seal the opening, but it must not be used without something to keep it from being sucked into the fire. Do not close the damper, since the smoke from the fire in the fireplace will come into the room.

.) Use a fire extinguisher. The best thing to use is a flare-like fire extinguisher designed specifically for chimney fires. They are available from fire equipment compaies. Regular CO2 fire extinguishers can also be used. Simply direct the nozzle into the chimney. A few applications may be necessary. Do not pour or spray water into the chimney. The rapid contraction caused by cooling will almost certainly break tiles.

.) Check the chimney temperature, Feel the surface of the chimney anywhere you can put your hand on it. If it gets too hot to touch, summon help immediately if you have not done so yet. Continue checking repeatedly-a chimney fire may last almost an hour, although most are over in minutes. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

.) Check the outside. Sparks and embers will be blown out the chimney top and can ignite roofs or nearby brush. Go outside and see where they're might be landing.
