Mold Self Test or Settling Plates

It is unlikely that there is any mould testing gimmick more useless than a “settling plate.” A settling plate is simply a Petri dish. The Petri dish is opened and placed on a counter or in a room and left exposed for a predetermined amount of time. The lid is replaced and the “sample” is sent to a “laboratory.”

In fact, it’s not a sample at all, and usually the “laboratory” is someone sitting in their basement sending out pre-printed “laboratory reports.”

The settling plate method is used exclusively by charlatans and “mould testing” con-men. The method is entirely incapable of producing results.

Usually, the bogus laboratory report will identify finding some number of colonies of some specified mould. This would be rather like conducting an “air test” in someone’s home and issuing a “laboratory report” stating the following result:

“We found air in the home.”

No legitimate expert in moulds, aerobiology indoor air quality or mycology would ever use settling plates. If your consultant has used this method you automatically know three things:

Your consultant is a con-artist
Your laboratory results are bogus
You just wasted your money and received nothing in return

We have seen several consultants issue themselves fancy “certificates” that identify themselves as “certified” mould testers. Often, the organizations have grandiose names that lend the impression that the organization has national or international recognition such as “American Indoor Air Quality Council” or “International Institute of Professional Mold Inspectors.” However, these titles are just words without any consensus support or backing from legitimate scientific or national regulatory agencies. As a general rule, legitimate experts in indoor moulds and microbiology are not member of these kinds of organizations.

None of these certificates carry legitimacy and none indicate any degree of competency in testing or mould assessments, and frequently it is the members of these groups that are caught using settling plates.

If you need a legitimate indoor assessment for moulds and fungi, contact a microbiologist, construction engineer, Industrial Hygienist, or mycologists. These individuals will perform a legitimate indoor mould assessment without the collection of ANY samples. Legitimate mould experts virtually NEVER perform “sampling” or “testing” during indoor mould assessments.
