Hate, Vitriol, & Life As Playing A Part On The Web.

Perhaps the idealistic of us can still recall in some stale moment this thought ...

though as much as I would like to bring that man to dinner, he is becoming my second favorite Beatle.

But let's not kid ourselves, ever.  We will disagree and be disagreeable in doing so.  We will take the most rational of thought and tear it to pieces because we can.  We will take something and/or someone we love and hurt them to the best of our ability to make sure their life won't possibly be better elsewhere.  And we'll continue to watch Cable News.

In retrospect, I pay attention to the wrong people ... at times.  I insert "We" to make me feel better about my own inadequacies.

When I arrived just outside of Philadelphia nearly ten years ago, I recall being quite annoyed by an Eagles Fan or three.  It's one thing to support your team and/or cause, quite another to upchuck green beer on my pants when I'm already late to an appointment to secure an abode on 7th and Chew.

But I never upchucked beer on anyone but myself.  And that has made me, you guessed it, a Steeler Fan!

Which brings this to its point, a prediction on tomorrows playoff game involving Baltimore & Pittsburgh.  There will be hate, vitriol, and Ed Reed staring down the eyes of Ben "How The Hell Do You Spell That Last Name" Roethisberger.  And they'll tweet about it, blog about it, showcase their quirky sense of humor about it, until the game is finally over.

And when it is, Steelers top the Raven at the score of 17-13,

I rejoice.

And I hope we play New England next.  If so, I plan to temper my vitriol for Brady's hairline with a cusp of hate for his bank account.  I won't go Bonnie & Clyde on his keister, even though I'm part of the Web.  Cause I know it is much easier being on this side of the critic's fence.

And if the Steelers lose, well, there's always next season to give peace a shot in the throat.

That sort of vitriol and hate is harmless, except when Philly fans boo Santa Clause. I spent a long time in Houston going to Oilers games. Boy, did we hate the Steelers.

The sort of hate speech that can be the last straw in pushing a nutball into getting his Glock and going to Safeway is an entirely different bit of vitriol, sad to say.

I live in Tucson and have an office in that now infamous Safeway center, and pretty much know of what I speak.

Booing Santa was kind of cool, even though it was Santa.  Part of me, a large one, respected Philly for that.

Do you recall Earl Campbell, Jon?  I don't but have saw numerous videos on the guy. a nightmare for the Steelers.  He's one of my all-time favorite running backs ... and I liked Glanville (Coach) as well.

Sports and competition are great times and we cheer and have emotional outbursts.  But we all love the game.

Jason, It will be a hard fought game in the trenches. The team with the fewest mistakes will be the victor...

Jason,  We lived in Philly 86-88 ish, and no doubt on the intensity of the fans.  We were there for the NFL strike, and there was no love lost for the strikebusters.  Heck, they were beating people up for going to the games with the sub players....I figured anyone paying full price to watch the non-NFL guys play was already being punished enough!  Bill

Hatred and envy is bad for your soul. I'm making the tough decision to exile anyone who needlessly unleashes it upon me. I'm of the belief you can route for anything without being against the opponent. If I believe in my side - whatever/whomever it may be - then I admire those willing to withstand a good-natured challenge. The competition isn't the bad guy - but merely the other guy.

GO STEELERS!

First...Jen is right, hatred ALWAYS destroys and love always creates!

However, this is football so we can raise all the hell we want, getting out of jail free and all that! Fan is short for fanatic...Right? So yes we are fans in that twisted way that makes us change into different personalities when it comes to football.  As a looooooong time Cowboys fan, yeah back to the Don Meredith days, I don't like Eagles Fans. They are tied with lowest on the hillbilly pole of the completely psychotic with Oakland fans! Yes, yes...I am aware we have our own hillbilly nightmare dysfunction down here in Jerry's world but the previous statement still holds water. Heck y'all are steeped in it, I've watched Eagles fans boo their players (even Santa Claus, again, as Jon mentioned) mercilessly and then march out at half time so often it's funny. Intensity? Nope just plain old psychotic  and this is when y'all are happy; the angry versions are lodged in another YouTube channel for adults only. Wait, you did not realize there is a channel just for crazy eagles fans? Here you go! Might want to bring along a supply of demerol, thorazine and while your at it some cough medecine as a mixer just to take the edge off a bit ;-O

Me? I am sad that Dallas will not release Jerry Jones as General manager, I am sad that my 2nd favorite team with our local boy Drew Brees fell apart and somehow gave a losing team a shot that will be short lived. Yes, we are blue in the Lewis House but have one chance left. This team Surprised? Yeah us too but after watching them on Hard Knocks we sorta got attached?!?! Plus we tend to be for the underdog around here no matter how irritating the BARK .

So that's it for us though if it comes down to the nut cutting as we sometimes say in Texas, I am with you and our AR friend June Martello Lewis on the Steelers. Just cannot take the arrogance of another look at Belichek but that is a whole nother rant in itself!

And the mention of world famous UT Ex, Earl Campbell? That was nice, He has a hard time walking these days but is a pillar in the community, a true gentleman! On the field, as you are already aware, many an opponent learned it was a painful process to try and stop, tackle or otherwise hinder his movement. What I wouldn't give for another version of Earl and/or Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett or maybe even Walt Garrison (a bad ass bull rider in the off season) but...there is always next year.

Hmm...this is some really great coffee this morning! Can I get some points for this post?

Jason, looks like you were right on this game, but alas you will have to tune into ESPN to see the large guy behind the mike talking in all kind of profanity about how he will dismantle the Steelers.  I look forward to seeing the Steel Curtain come back to life!

Duuuh on me! Because I was sure I'd seen posts by Jason Sardi in December, maybe even early January - I was sure I'd find where the change happening.  Guess not. :-(
