The Fear That Prevents Success

We hear people talk a lot about fear of failure and even fear of success. But after listening to some people talk today I think maybe the one that holds people back the most is fear of disappointment.

Maybe that's tied to fear of failure, but I think it's something bigger - and sadder.

If you study the law of attraction, you know that whatever you think about most is what you're going to get. If you think about failure, you're going to get failure. So the best thing to do if you want success is to think about it, talk about it, and expect it. You have to hope for it.

And yet, there are many who keep right on talking about failure. You couldn't get them to admit that something even has a chance to turn out right. And so of course, it never does, because they consistently get the failure that they focus on each day.

If you study the law of attraction you also know that some other people think you're slightly batty. They think all that positive thought stuff is hocus-pocus and nonsense. And there's no chance that they'd buy into and do silly things like deliberately thinking about the things in their life that they appreciate. There's absolutely no way that they'd "tell it like they want it" instead of "how it is."

Some people can get almost hostile over the whole idea of the law of attraction.

And my thought has been "Why? What does anyone have to lose from thinking better thoughts?"

Today I came to the conclusion that they are afraid to get their hopes up for fear of being disappointed. So it's easier to simply go along saying things like "I know I'll never be able to ... " or "I know I can never earn enough to  ..."

By never hoping for something better, they never have to suffer the pain of disappointment. If you're already miserable, it can't get worse, right?

I wish there was a magic pill for that - I'd give it to a few people I care about.

wow...how right you are!  i struggle with the rest of my family because of my optimisim and belief in the Law of Attraction - they think I'm just that crazy sister/mom/cousin who lives in SF and therefore I must be 'out of it'.  How wrong they are....

While I think the Law Of Attraction has some merit, I think many people put too much into the premise presented.  Positive thinking is definitely a benefit and assists the subconscious, but the universe isn't going to hand anyone anything.

I'm sticking with "Fear Of Failure" as the fear that prevents success.

Peggy - I don't even mention it to most of my friends and family any more - but I was tickled when my older son called yesterday to tell me "The Law of Attraction came through again Mom." What is funny is that my younger son is using it to his benefit all the time, but denies that LOA has anything to do with his success. I've quit arguing with him.

Cameron - I probably shouldn't have mixed the two ideas together, although they fit in my mind, because when you focus on failure, you'll get it. Last night I was thinking about the people who don't allow themselves to hope for something better because they're afraid they'll fail and be disappointed. It's easier to stay at the bottom and "know" that they'll never get anywhere in life. No chance of disappointment with that one.

It's more than hoping for success.  It's PREPARING for it and it all starts with those positive thoughts.  You are 100% correct.  If you focus on failure, that's what you'll get.  If you focus on success, you'll get that.

Chris Ann - I believe that. And if you don't get it immediately, keep on keeping on, because it's on the way.

When I was a teen (and that has been a while), I become convinced that good came from everything, that inside every unhappy event was going to be some bit of good.  I was known for aggressively shoveling a pile of Pony Poop actively searching for the pony that had to be buried in there somewhere!

In the last few years I have come to understand that EVERYTHING that happens is a gift, that it is all good.  I have learned that Pony Poop grows great roses!

It is all good.  It is all a gift.

Judith - As a teen you were wise beyond your years - Sometimes it's difficult to see the good, but if you shovel hard enough, you can find it.
