blogging resources, garaughty.com

In the past few weeks, I've seen a lot of posts by new bloggers looking for advice, help and direction... so I thought I'd post some of my favorite blog resources as sort of a starting point or reference for new bloggers.

My first words of advice would be to read other people's blogs. See what attracts you to read certain blogs. Is it the topic, the headline, the writing style? Make comments, try to give insightful feedback, this will get you known in the community and will help to generate interest in your own blog. Comments like "nice post" probably won't get you much attention and...

After all, you're competiting for the reader's attention and limited time while trying to build your own little community. If you want to stand out from the crowd, just be yourself, be honest and be original. Share your ideas, knowledge and stories. In other words, talk about what you know.

To help get you going, here are some of my favorite blog marketing references and further food for thought...

Three free chapters from Jeremy Wright's book titled Blog Marketing.

Technorati's Blogging 101 a nice overview of blogging with definitions of common blogging terms.

Almost anything written by Mary McKnight, always well written and stuff you really need to know.

The Widget Box, tons of useful and/or fun accessories to spice up your blog.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. More goodies, widgets and strategies are popping up each week related to blogging so I'll post the most interesting ones I see as I find them. Feel free to share your own favorite blog toys and resources. There are so many of them out there, we can all learn a lot from each other.

Excellent suggestion -- don't start with Mary. She's the blogGoddess. You may never emerge! She never has less than 20 people answer her blogs.

Start at the very beginning of Mary's blog on AR.. print them all out. Read them. Learn them. Love them. Live them. If you're new to blogging you'll be snugly and comfortable very soon.

She suggested that I completely redo my website because it was a flash site, which means the google spiders see pictures, not words... and my google rating would never raise. If you aren't sure if you have a flash site, try to "highlight" the words. If you can't highlight them, the spiders can't see them. Time to start another webpage. We did. And it worked. We are now #1 when you type in clark county virtual tours (no small feat) and #1 when you type in vancouver washington virtual tours (thanks to AR).

Marti we could use a spell checker as someone above mentioned, and the links especially to Mary are very important.

Marti, good post and good information for the blogging illiterate.  Even though I've got several blogs, I still feel like my learning curve is quite steep.  The reading you have posted is very well written and easy to understand.  Thanks for the post!

Thanks for some great external links. Sometimes we get so focused on blogging and commenting on ActiveRain that we forget to look to other sites. This will definitely expand our perspectives.

Debi... welcome aboard and thanks for your comment. We were all newbies at some point and from personal experience, I found the best way to get started is just to do it. Be yourself, share and talk about what you know. You'll see that after a few posts, blogging becomes pretty natural.

This is a great post for first time bloggers.  I am sure this will definately help in business and relationship building.  I also feel blogs are a great way to market your listings, so I would like to offer some more advice on blogging.  Look at blogs as unique web pages.  The more you have the better your web exposure.  So,  check out vflyer.com and postlets.com.  These 2 sites will allow you to auto post your listings and give you greater exposure.  Good luck!

Sincerely,

CJ Harrington
