Thundersnow in Towson, Maryland

By

Last night we had a wild Thundersnow storm in Towson and the majority of the Baltimore area.

The city only saw 3-4 inches of snow, but here in Towson, we had over a foot!

The sky turned bright white as lightning flashed, and my dogs hid as claps of thunder rolled through.

Thundersnow is very unusual because it requires the perfect combination of warmer air closer to the ground, while cooler air comes in over top.

Here are more details from Wikipedia.

The storm created major travel problems, with some reporting 9 hours to do a 10 mile commute, and a large number of cars being abandoned along the sides of the road, causing huge issues for the snowplows. Thundersnow is usually accompanied by heavy snow, and that was certainly the case here. A rate of 2" per hour!

Large fallen branchesThe aftermath is a mess, and my yard is a bit of proof. Huge branches have fallen, but an even larger number haven't. They are stuck in the trees, ready to fall when a big wind blows. We have large pine trees in both the front and the back of my house -- and I can see the branches hanging precariously on edge.

Luckily only one of my dogs is tall enough to make it out past the area we shoveled for them, so hopefully they won't get hurt when those branches fall.

We were lucky not to lose power as so many did. I am hoping it remains that way!

Stay warm!

Hi Marney, thunder and lightening with snow.  Very amazing.  My one Boxer named BABE is terrified of storms and has to as close to me as he can get hen it does storm.  Be careful with those broken branches.

Thanks, Judith, it was wild! Tree people are, of course, backlogged, and ours haven't created a problem -- yet. Those who have them laying on their house (as one of my friends does) come first!

Hi Marney... it may be a huge inconvenience and impair driving safety, but it sure is pretty to look at!  Glad to know that you are safe and warm!

Hi Robert! I am SO ready for Spring! :)

Hi Steve! Did you get hit in this storm? How are you faring?

Eric- we MUST catch up. I miss you!

Lauren - that is nothing on last year -- we had two two-foot blizzards in a week. Piles of snow around our driveway were taller than I am! (Nevermind parking lots which were 10'+++) :)
