Don't Be So Rigid You Might Burst Your Own Balloon.

The home next door is up for sale.  Open house.  Real estate agent has signs all over, ties ribbons around the trees, sandwich boards around the front yard with arrows pointing inside and ... has balloons.

Balloons all over - the street signs, the front door - a child would think there is a birthday party happening in the house.  Well at least mine does!

I see the agent outside strolling around the front yard so I go over to say hi.  A few minutes later, a car pulls up and out jumps a family - with twin little girls.

Now tell me - what do little kids do when they see balloons?  When mine was little like that, if she got a balloon she thought she struck gold - her world was complete and she wanted nothing more if someone gave her a balloon. Simple happiness.

The girls go running for the balloons while screaming, "I'd like the pink one - no the red -- Mommy could we pick two balloons?"

As they jumped up and down to reach the balloons, real estate agent, grimacing and gritting her teeth, "I'm sorry little girls, you can't have any balloons, they are for the open house - come along let's all go inside."

Hello?  They are four years old.  What do they know about open houses?  Not to mention, any kid that sees a bunch of balloons thinks they are either in Applebee's where they get free balloons, or they are headed to a birthday party with cake. And balloons?  They are cheap - it's not like it's going to break the money bank and besides, what on earth is she planning to do with them after the open house?

I can't stand to see a bummed out kid especially when it's simple to make them happy. So I go inside, blow up several balloons of various colors for each of the girls and attach strings of curly ribbons.

I wait for the family to leave.  I hand each of the girls the balloons.  I giggle and jump up and down with them while mom and dad laugh.   The girls think they struck gold and mom gives me a hug (because I've been there and know they were going to have to find balloons before the end of the day!).   I hand Mom my business card and wave to the agent!

Good morning Gabrielle, I have twin grandchild so yes a balloon is a big deal to a five year old.  Good for you taking a little stress out of the home finding process for that family. Even if it's only a balloon.....Make it a great day.

Gab,

This is absolutely priceless. That balloon headed agent is going to regret her decision. So tell me...do you keep balloons in the house just for these occasions? ;)

Gabrielle, my younger one is still a little boy who would love to play with balloons. I always plan on bringing extra ballons for situations like these. Who wants to disappoint those little sweet heart.

After my open house, I brought my left over balloons at home and my kids love to play rest of the evening with them.

Giving kids a balloon or two could have been a step-in for the agent. Their loss, your gain

Balloons signify a party, and the little girls deserved one. I'm glad they came to the right neighborhood.

I always put my clients first in any transaction!
RE/MAX Professionals.

We lost the right of putting balloons on Open Houses a long time ago in some cities. Now they require a $100 permit, per Open House sign, per year, in the city I have sold the most homes in. It takes at least 4 signs to do an open house in this city!
This is the start of another great week Gabs...

OK-I believe that agent must not have kids. The way to get to the parents are the kids. Here have as many balloons as you want and here is my cards. Let's meet up for coffee to discuss your next purchase.

This is a good example of bad/good customer service.  I always bring extra balloons to the open house because even "big" kids like them!
