Chinese New Year Celebrations on Maui - Year of the Rabbit

Here on Maui we have a rich cultural heritage, especially from Asian countries.  It's no wonder we like to celebrate along with them.  Coming up soon is the Chinese New Year, the year of the Rabbit.  Here's what's happening on Maui to celebrate Kung Hee Fat Choy, according to a recent press release...

Maui Chinese New Year Festival

The Twelfth Annual Maui Chinese New Year Festival, sponsored in part by the County of Maui, will be held this year on Saturday, February 05, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Maui Mall in Kahului.  Mayor Alan Arakawa will open the festivities at 10:00 a.m. Lion Dancers and firecracker blessings will follow immediately thereafter, and be repeated at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting.  Come and enjoy:
  • Lion Dancers and firecracker blessing
  • Keiki Chinese costume contest
  • Tai Chi and Kung Fu demonstrations
  • Chinese food booths, cooking demonstrations
  • Chinese arts and crafts, Chinese dancers
  • local produce, farmer's market
  • calligraphy, and leather brush artistry
  • Good Luck photos for the kids
  • Rabbit crats, Children's Art Contest exhibit

Lion Dancers at the County Building
Master Ben Seng Au will bring FIVE Lions from his Shaolin Arts Society to the front lawn of the County Building on Friday, February 04, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. Kung Fu demonstrations will precede the fireworks and festivities. The performances are open to the public, especially the children of Maui, and are sponsored by the County of Maui, with Mayor Alan Arakawa presiding over the cultural celebration. If you want good luck in the coming year, have your lycee (red envelopes) ready for the Lions.

The Year of the Rabbit:

  • also known as the Yin Metal Rabbit, 4709 on the Chinese Lunar calendar, begins with the new moon at midnight, between Wednesday Feb 2, 2011, and Thursday Feb 3, 2011.
  • Other Rabbit Years are 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, and 1999.

Significance of the Year of the Rabbit
  • The year, with the Rabbit coming in fourth to the Rat, the Ox, and the Tiger in the animal sequence, is predicted to be a year of tranquility and harmony, a time to rest, catch one's breath, and calm ones nerves, in order prepare for upcoming events, which are slated to be hectic in the oncoming Year of the Dragon.
  • Negotiation and persuasion will be better than force, and diplomacy and international relations will come to the fore.
  • It will also be a time to focus on personal finances, home, family, and artistic pursuits.

Symbol of the Rabbit
  • The Rabbit is the symbol of the Moon, the Yin of Heaven, signifying magic.
  • When looking at the full Moon, one may spot a Rabbit, standing under a Cassia tree, holding in its paws the Elixir of Immortality.
  • The Rabbit is thus a symbol of longevity and endurance.
  • The Rabbit is also a symbol for mercy, elegance, and worship of beauty, and of course, Good Luck.

The Rabbit personality
  • Rabbit personalities are keen and able to pay close attention to situations developing around them
  • calm, considerate, and cautious in the handling of crises
  • strong-minded, ambitious, and orderly in their personal affairs
  • love artistic ventures and creativity
  • should be cautious about becoming lax and aloof and too self-indulgent.

Georgina, there's a lot going on - sounds like such fun.  And, thank you for taking the time to explain the meaning behind the "year of the rabbit."  I like  that it's a year of tranquility and harmony.  Hopefully it will be true.
