February 3, 1959 The Day The Music Died

February 3, 1959 The Day The Music Died,
This date may be before your time but, it seems as though it was just yesterday for some of us.
So, why is February 3, 1959 known as “The Day The Music Died”Guitar Three Rock & Roll stars died in a tragic plane crash on this date.  Buddy Holly and The Crickets had a couple of big hits, “That’ll Be the Day” and “Peggy Sue”.
Ritchie Valens, just a teenager not much older than me, had three big songs, “Come On, Let’s Go”, “Donna” and “La Bamba”.
J. P. Richardson “The Big Bopper” had one big hit “Chantilly Lace” in 1958.
These three guys were the forerunners to a lot of the music that we hear today and the world lost a lot of talent on February 3, 1959 The Day The Music Died.

Did I mention these were the days of the sock hop?  Oh that could be another post.

Good morning James,

I too remember the music and listen to the oldies a lot.  Just one problem they don't go back that far.

Don, yes that was a tragic day for the music world and music lovers the world over.  Those musicians were immortalized by Don McLean's "American Pie" song back in 1971.

Remember the incident, forgot the date. Those were different times. Want to be reminded and listen to the music, XM channel 5 does a terrific job with the oldies normal stations have quit playing. Our age group does not listen to enough radio I guess!

Good morning Wayne,

I don't have XM radio maybe I should knowing what I now know.  The oldies stations now-a-days start in the late 60's if they play it at all.

Good morning Don. I was a little too young to have any memories but it is always sad when a gifted performer dies. Kinda robs us all.

Morning Don.  I was barely walking when this happened, but, it was the end of some great musical talent.

Are you still shoveling or just hibernating?
