Jacksonville Beach, FL Paid Parking Update

The City Council had planned to more permanently implement paid parking as a way to better manage our public parking in the entertainment district of Jacksonville Beach, FL.

Apparently, the cost of the implementation was not presented (this is my understanding, I was not present at any of the meetings) when the plan was approved.

Even though the costs would be essentially amortized over a long period of time, I'm not certain this is a great expenditure at this time - maybe the City Council should consider a lot by lot implementation plan instead?

We've got a parking issue in Seattle too, Carol. The mayor has pushed for higher hourly rates to force people to ride bikes. And he thinks create more turn over. Guess again mayor, people will quite going downtown altogether, and just hit the malls causing more driving.

Carol, the challenges of tracking the ins and outs of local city council actions happen in Santa Fe as well. We have meters in the downtown area of our Historic Plaza and now several parking garages. Whether those meters pay for themselves would be a good question here too.

The total picture of cost to run a paid parking facility and put one up versus the struggles of finding a parking place.  My community has had to deal with the population explosion and popularity of our downtown center.  Good luck as a way to make it work will be discovered.

Glenn: I wonder if the mayor is correct in thinking more people would ride their bikes!

Emily: It's the upfront cost of the metes that seems to have been overlooked, in my opinion, in this instance.

Connie: That's just it: we don't have the real estate to build a structure, so the proposal is for meters & to help give everyone who wants to enjoy the beach an equal opportunity. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I remember when parking along the beach was FREE - there is a concept - but then I also remember when there were NO condos along the beaches!
