Almost a decade ago I started using the services of Pend Oreille Veterinary Services bringing my beloved Samoyed Chardonnay to their clinic. My vet's name was Jerry Lewis, an unforgettable character. Dr. Lewis graduated from Colorado State University and established Pend Oreille Veterinary Service in June, 1964. He and his wife Pat are closely tied in to the community, and while he is a great vet, he is now in semi-retirement and is at the clinic a couple of days a week.

For over 46 years this multifaceted clinic has served our community, and their six vets have over 103 combined years of service and knowledge in the veterinary profession.

Because of my radio show and community involvement, I have worked closely with our Chief of Sandpoint Police Mark Lockwood many times, and his son-in-law (forgive the pun) Dr. Mark Fineman, is also a vet at Pend Oreille Veterinary Services. He was featured in this January 18, 2011 article in the Bonner Daily Bee. Here is another touching story about ‘Biggie' the cat that Dr. Fineman treated recently.

Last week I interviewed Dr. Fineman on my radio show, Speak Up North Idaho. Dr. Fineman is an Idaho native originally from Idaho Falls. He was an undergrad at the University of Idaho and matriculated to the WSU veterinary school.

During his years of studying, he would come up to Sandpoint and intern at the clinic. There is virtually no job he has not done, from cleaning cages to working the front desk.

A typical day for the vet is surgery in the mornings and appointments in the afternoon. Typical cases include animals with fleas, dogs eating inappropriate things, cat abscesses, and

I asked Dr. Mark what he would recommend for pet owners to better care for their junior family members. His answer was annual exams, vaccines, deworm every 3-4 months, and blood work. It is wintertime, and he also suggested creating a warm place for outdoor pets, checking their paws for cuts due to ice, jackets when very cold, and making sure their water is thawed.

The clinic offers a wealth of services including some that other veterinary clinics don't provide, such as lodging, a doggy park, acupuncture, exotic animal care, ultrasound, and cremation, in addition to advanced services such as surgery, endoscopy and grooming. A neat feature on the website is their Just for Fun page offering tips for the time of year we are in.

The Finemans are celebrating their 18-month old daughter in an area that the couple loves. Spending summer vacations working at Pend Oreille Veterinary Services he found the mountains, trees and recreation allowing time with his family on the lake or in the mountains, wakeboarding or snowboarding.

One of Dr. Fineman's interests is in behavioral medicine, especially that associated with shelter animals. With the clinic directly across the street from Panhandle Animal Shelter, this is a field that he can explore fully.

Dr. Fineman reminded us that January was Spay and Neuter month and February is Dental Health Month. Check out PetDental.com for great tips, and learn more about pet dental care at the American Veterinary Medical Association dental health page.
