USAA and Navy Federal Credit Union VA loans for military homebuyers in San Diego, CA

Are service members too loyal to USAA and Navy Federal Credit Union? Those are the two financial institutions that a high number of service members go to first for banking needs such as VA home loans, car loans, credit cards, insurance and financial planning. The overwhelming reason for such loyalty is the belief that either institution offers the best service, value, and product for the military community. That perhaps no other company knows, understands and appreciates the service member well enough to provide the customer care the military members need.

In reality, there may be some truth to that idea but at the same time, military members need to do their homework before accepting such belief. Before a potential military homebuyer begins the process of purchasing a home, it is wise to shop around for a VA loan or other types of mortgage products. I’ve had to explain repeatedly to military homebuyers in San Diego, CA that USAA and Navy Federal Credit Union don’t have the monopoly on VA loans.

Most major banks offer VA loans and the service member would be doing themselves a big disservice by not shopping around. For example, Wells Fargo has an aggressive Military Mortgage Express program that offers a special relocation loan pricing that is different from the general pricing shown on their daily rates page. The individual has to be eligible and relocating due to PCS orders.

As a real estate agent that helps military homebuyers in San Diego with their real estate needs, I have to caution service members not to just compare banks on interest rate. Many of the complaints I’ve received from those that look straight to USAA and Navy Federal Credit Union for VA loans in San Diego, CA, is that the customer service was poor. Once the loan application is submitted, the wait time can be long to get an approval response from either financial institutions and a mortgage representative is not assigned to the homebuyer until a purchase contract is accepted on the house.

Buyer Beware if you are using USAA or Navy Federal for VA loans and you are buying a condominium.  More times than I care to count, these two lenders are absolutely positive they can do a VA loan for that condo, even when the buyer asks several times to make absolutely certain.  Then, 5 or 6 days before closing, they suddenly realize that, "We can't do this loan."  Leaves buyers scrambling to find a local lender who can actually get the job done before they are in default on their contract closing date.  Terrible customer service and you don't even have a local presence you can go to in person.

Hello Drick,

What you've described in regards to VA loan financing with Navy Federal Credit Union and USAA happens quite frequently. The VA home buyer is often left feeling betrayed because he or she felt confident both institutions would have their backs. I try to stress the importance of comparing lenders not only to compare rates but service too. Those that heed my advice have a much better buying experience than those that don't.  Unfortunately, some VA home buyers finally get it when the sales process has gone too far to change lenders.

Drick, as Realtors that provide a great service to the military community, we have to keep on educating the VA home buyer about the process.
