Your answer should be $#%^)....oops, SHIFT was on.... :)  43560.

Does that number mean anything to you?  If you're a consumer, probably not a number you see or think about every day, but to an agent who works anywhere except in the heart of the big cities, it's an important number!  43560 is the number of Square Feet in an Acre as we measure it here in the U.S.

football fieldNow for most people, an acre is hard to visualize, so lets try to turn it into something you might be able to relate to if you're a sports oriented person!

Your NFL football field is per regulation (including the end zones) 360
feet long by 160 feet wide.  Multiply length x width and divide by 43560 and you get 1.32 acres and change.  So a FULL field is 1 1/3 acres basically.  Take off the 60 feet of endzones and you drop to 1.1 acres, so 1 1/10 acres goal line to goal line.  Chop the field down to 90.75 yards and you've got that one acre basically on the nose.  Can you visualize that?  Throw one of those spaces out there and multiply it by the number of acres and you start to get a better idea of how big that lot is!  Five acres is a LOT of room to work with for the average homeowner.

basketball courtBut say you want something smaller, you're moving into a subdivision and the lots are well under an acre.  What's a rule of thumb to work with there?  Lets switch to an NBA regulation size court.  That's 50 feet wide and 94 feet long.  Multiply out again, divide by 43560 again and you get .108 acres, now you can argue whether that's 1/9th of an acre or 1/10th, but lets round down for rough estimation purposes.  Every .1 or a tenth of an acre offered with the home is one basketball court.  So again, .25 acres is 2.5 basketball courts, .5 acres roughly five courts.

Hopefully this helps you get a bit of a handle on how big a lot is!  When you start seeing lots listed under .25 acres, understand the houses WILL be close to each other!  When you see FIVE acres, understand you're going to spend a lot of time mowing the property unless it is heavily wooded.  No matter WHICH end of the spectrum you want, there ARE homes with LARGE and SMALL lots available, and if you want NO lot, well there are condos to take care of you :)
