It was like the North Pole on the Vancouver Island slopes last week!

So ... last Wednesday I managed to arrange 2 days away from real estate to go skiing with my wife and son. Of course we were all really looking forward to this little break, but little did we know what was in store for us.

Mt. Washington is a 4 hour drive from Victoria up the island to Courtney - it was a beautiful day, sunny but cool. I had checked the weather and knew it wasn't going to be perfect, perhaps even a little extra snow. Our first day was great - we had fun with our 6 year old and my 16 year old nephew. Conditions were perfect, we had a good few hours of skiing and my son was even warned by the ski patrol to "SLOW DOWN" on the bunny slopes -and since it was only his second time skiing we thought that was hilarious.

Fun on the slopes of Mt. Washington

Next morning ...

Snow outside the condo. Mt. Washington
Talk about the North Pole!! How can I ski down this big hill Dad?

We awoke to huge piles of snow outside our condo ...

We were warned that we might not be able to get out that day - and we hadn't brought any extra food! The condo was rented and didn't have any provisions, so we knew somehow we had to get off the mountain that day.

Mt. Washington Condo Garage

Thank goodness for underground parking!!

By mid afternoon we had managed to dig a pathway out of the garage, and arrived back in Victoria by 8 pm.

There was a lesson to be learned that day - in future, take chains when driving to the North Pole, take extra food, and believe the weather forecast!

But I must admit, we had a super first day, and as our son loved it so much I will definitely make time to do it again before summer!!

David, Old man winter is so unpredictable.  You might want to add food to the list :)

Neat image! Flying to CO middle of next month to ski with two college age sons and can not wait. Winter is not a time to hibernate. Snow is not a bad four letter word. Swish swish... and we're not talking about flouride treatments.

David - I always carry extra food in the snow. Looks like you had a great time anyway. And actual skis, not boards.

Hi Mike - Yes, we did have a great time. Definitely will take lots more food next time we go. We're so lucky to live only a few hours away from skiing. Thanks for your comment.

Cheers!

David, you created a fabulous and exciting memory for your son and your nephew.  It would have faded away as just another ski trip otherwise :0)    Great photos!

Thanks Susan - we loved it on the slopes. I had to stop the boys from building a snow-house outside the condo though!

All the best!

Well, you got one good day in, and I think it will be a long time before your son forgets that he was warned to slow down on the bunny hills. Sounds like you have a budding speed-demon on your hands there David.

Hi Malcolm - we certainly had one good day, and you're right about a speed demon - like many kids his age he has no fear.  Too bad we live so far from the Mt. Washington Alpine Ski Resort! Now if we still lived in Ontario we could ski constantly, although it might be more cross-country than downhill.

Thanks for your comment.

David - What an adventure!  We used to have a 2nd home in Qualicum Beach, and used to go up to Mt Washington in the winter.  What a great mountain to ski on.  We never experienced that kind of downfall there, though - wow!

Hi Sally - Qualicum Beach is such a lovely little town - and so much closer to Mt. Washington than Victoria is, so you must have been able to ski often. Do you ski in Vancouver now?

Hi David - QB is beautiful - my parents are retired there.  No, I haven't skied here for a couple of years - took snowshoeing up, though - great snowshoeing at Mt. Seymour!  Your little boy sounds like he'll be a great downhill skier when he's older!

David:  You know sometimes easterners are just a little bit jealous of BC weather.  Thank you for making me sympathetic instead of green eyed.  Good photos,  I would not live through winter now without winter tires.  They make a huge difference - guess you don't need them the other 364 days a year.  Sigh.

Hi Valerie - I had to laugh at your remarks re. our weather in BC. I know ... we do get a few "digs" in when friends from other parts of Canada are bemoaning the fact that they're fed up with their weather in comparison with ours on the west coast. I think if we're going to continue skiing I'm definitely getting winter tires and chains!!

Cheers!
