Nothing was more exciting at the recent Keller Williams Family Reunion in LA than the presentation by Stefan Swanepoel of his fabulous new business fable Surviving Your Serengeti: 7 Skills to Master Business and Life

Focusing on the survival skills of each of seven animals who live, breed and die in this rugged country of  the Dark Continent,  the inveterate visionary of  real estate trends is bound to have a best seller.

His tale is about overcoming obstacles, discovering who you are, what you're good out and how to get better. Each animal possesses an innate survival strategy that means the difference between survival or death. Those skills transferred to human business traits are the key to thriving in today's fast-paced global business world. Internet, mobile media, fast food chains, demand for speed, comfort and instant gratification, global and financial challenges are exhausting

Happily, the online test confirmed. I am a wildebeest. They  persevere  with the help of others.

Each year more than 2 million wildebeest travel the 1,000 miles across the Serengeti Plain encountering  predators and dangers of all kinds, to find food and water. The trek is so amazing that it's been called one of the Natural Wonders of the World.

Perhaps this explains my draw to long distance running! Or maybe it was the fact I was born in in Missouri, the "Show me" state, am a Taurus, and moved around a lot as a kid.

Growing up the daughter of Smokey the Bear's helper (my father was a  sylvaculturalist with the U.S.. Forest Service) I was blessed to know nature an early age. A walk in the woods with my dad was a lesson in so much. He encouraged me to look up and listen, as well as down and around.

Continuing to look up when you are down is not always easy, but it gives a new perspective. Several career changes, divorce, recovery and now discovering a passion for practicing and teaching yoga as well as helping people buy and sell homes has required constant new perspectives, and developing strategies reflected so well by the graceful giraffe, mothering elephant, focused cheetah, playful and risk-taking mongoose.

Surviving Your Serengeti: 7 Skills to Master Business and Life by Stefan Swanepoel, is a way to learn about your own  traits. It's a book you will want to keep on your bookshelf and give to friends and clients

Stefan Swanepoel's life , growing up in a diplomatic household, beginning with his birth in Kenya to schooling in Hong Kong and South Africa  led to him  running a New York-based global franchise network with 25,000 sales associates in 30 countries. In all he has served as president of seven companies and two non-profit organizations.

He writes:  During my formative years in Africa, I developed deep feelings for the nature and wildlife that surrounded me; they became a part of me, and I of them. But as I became an adult and turned my attention to the world of business, I left Africa and the Serengeti behind to immigrate to America.

  • Everyone can survive his or her own personal Serengeti, no matter the challenges
  • No journey is ever too long
  • Nothing is impossible.

Good job, Janice.  You are the first "Serengeti" blog I've read that was a wildebeest!  Youare blessed to have spent that kind of quality time with your dad.

Janice, what a great review, so much to overcome during your life. It makes sense you are a wildebeest - it takes endurance to deal with adversities. Nice to meet you, Janice. I am also part of KW.

Elizabeth, so nice to meet you. My parents live in Annadale and I get done there as much as I can. I LOVE Old Town Alexandria, and go to Down Dog Toga Studio in Georgetown. Maybe we can get together next visit. Great to have a KW agent to refer to there.
