Are You Pushing Your Business or Merely Riding It?

Your Future Business Road …. Is It Uphill or Downhill?

 

As our markets continue to improve I am often asked what I see coming over the hill … I often respond with Lions, Tigers, and Bears OH MY! 

 

But seriously …what lies on the other side of the hill may not be as important as the huge "Semi-Trucks" you face daily ...barreling straight at you.

 

Many REALTORS are over occupied with battling the here and now …The short sale listing facing foreclosure … The unreasonable Seller refusing to lower a list price to stay ahead of the market …The uneducated Buyer who thinks every home on the market is 25% over priced …or the day to day of family, finances , and time management.

 

The old saying “it is all downhill from here” makes me think of the time period from 1999 – 2006… Here in the Triangle Area of North Carolina it seemed we could do no wrong …it all seemed so easy ...and the commissions kept rolling in ….or in other words …it seemed like we were rolling downhill and picking up speed.

 

Well let’s look closely at the analogy. What happens when things get easy, when you reach the crest of the hill? …You stop pushing and you step up off the ground and start to ride the momentum? You stop having to exert effort to keep moving forward right?

 

As any fitness instructor will tell you …Effort = Results …and it takes movement for growth. During this real estate “bubble” period a lot of us became very relaxed …we began to expect business to just come jump in our laps as we sat there getting fat, soft, and lazy. Well then along comes “THE CHANGE” …(2007 – 2010), many of us had not been in the real estate gym for a workout in a very long time …

 

We were overweight with confidence and ego …some of us tried to start putting forth some of the effort needed to push our business cart back up the hill, but our networking muscles were soft and our resolve was weak …

 

After a few weeks of waking up “sore” every morning …we stopped going to the effort gym and went back to sleeping late, doughnuts for breakfast, and sitting, hoping and wishing for a new client to come along and once again jump in our laps and say “I need you”!  Well how is that working for ya?

 

Pushing your business uphill is what makes you strong! It builds the “muscle” necessary to carry you through the dips and curves life can …and will …dish out. “Pushing” is hard work …Activities like Networking, Prospecting, Face to Face Visits, Hand Written Personal Notes, and adding value to every transaction is what reshapes your business physique. The minute you stopped pushing was the minute you hung your “Going out of Business” sign on your door. It’s time to turn the sign over so it reads “Getting Back To Business”!

 

Is today your day to get back to the real estate gym? Will it be easy ….Not a Chance! …But once you start to see the changes it creates in your business you will be motivated to continue to “work-out”! …REMEMBER NO PAIN NO GAIN!

 

So what do I see over the hill??? Most likely another hill in the distance …Which will make me even stronger!

WOW - now this one hits home..  I felt like I should get to the gym then thought no get to the prospecting, calling, asking for business - have to do all!  Going out of Business.... could go that route or as you suggest - Going back to business.  Have to quit Tinkering at all and get focused - thanks Eddie, this one is excellent!!
