I must admit back in the days before I became a real estate agent, I had mixed feelings about members of the profession. The teaching profession, my previous career, is home to a dedicated, stable, and for the most part, responsible group intent on educating the next generation. I was taken aback by the varying level of dedication and commitment I found in the real estate profession. Definitely a less homogeneous group than teachers, or at least the ones I knew.
As a former corporate gypsy I bought and sold many homes. I experienced firsthand, what not to do, and what to do repeatedly. I've been "lost" with agents without a map, I've been in a car with an agent with alcohol on her breath, and I once interviewed a potential listing agent who was clearly off her meds. Believe me, consumers can tell some interesting stories about us too!
As a new agent my mission was to improve the public impression of real estate agents, and I was my first pupil. I vowed to educate rather than hard sell. I vowed to show up, return calls and give my best effort to each and every client. After a few years, I found myself offering advice and support to new agents. My business partner (and son) learned the business working with me. It takes time to develop expertise in this business, but honesty, integrity and good character are qualities the newly licensed and the experienced veterans can apply daily, and it has the power to win respect for our entire industry.
If you're a new agent, select an agent you wish to emulate, and observe not only their sales techniques, but also their human qualities. If you are a more experienced agent and in need of an assistant, select an agent to share your wealth of knowledge with and play a role in elevating the standards of our industry one agent at a time. Training the next generation of real estate agents is a high calling.
