Mentoring--Paying It Forward

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Charlemagne International Properties BRE# 01147470

I must admit back in the days before I became a real estate agent, I had mixed feelings about members of the profession.  The teaching profession, my previous career, is home to a dedicated, stable, and for the most part, responsible group intent on educating the next generation.  I was taken aback by the varying level of dedication and commitment I found in the real estate profession.  Definitely a less homogeneous group than teachers, or at least the ones I knew.

As a former corporate gypsy I bought and sold many homes.  I experienced firsthand, what not to do, and what to do repeatedly.  I've been "lost" with agents without a map, I've been in a car with an agent with alcohol on her breath, and I once interviewed a potential listing agent who was clearly off her meds.  Believe me, consumers can tell some interesting stories about us too!

As a new agent my mission was to improve the public impression of real estate agents, and I was my first pupil.  I vowed to educate rather than hard sell.  I vowed to show up, return calls and give my best effort to each and every client.  After a few years, I found myself offering advice and support to new agents.  My business partner (and son) learned the business working with me.  It takes time to develop expertise in this business, but honesty, integrity and good character are qualities the newly licensed and the experienced veterans can apply daily, and it has the power to win respect for our entire industry.

If you're a new agent, select an agent you wish to emulate, and observe not only their sales techniques, but also their human qualities.  If you are a more experienced agent and in need of an assistant, select an agent to share your wealth of knowledge with and play a role in elevating the standards of our industry one agent at a time.  Training the next generation of real estate agents is a high calling.

Norma- I bet you're setting a great example to those in your community and here at ActiveRain.  Instead of closing your eyes to the industry or complaining about others, you're leading by example.  Many, many years ago I was an agent for about 1 year and was so lucky to have had a Realtor who'd been in the business for 30+ years and took me under her wings.

Norma, it's very true that as an industry we have a less than stellar reputation with the public. There are some real characters out there who give hard working agents a bum rap. We can only try to do the best we can and be as honest and forthright as possible.

Gary - The veterans may be more than happy to take a newbie under their wing or add them as a team member so it's a win-win.

Norma, Mentoring is such a gift. We give of our time, our knowledge, our experience and our “expertise.” The gift is priceless. Far too many people (agents) do not understand the level of “honesty, integrity and good character” you refer to here. They cannot reach it unless they can first understand what it is … and what it is not. Hats off to you for giving so much of yourself to others in teaching and mentoring … rather than hard selling.

Norma,

In commercial real estate, in some of the larger offices one was assigned juniors to mentor.  We did that in our firm, because it is important to engender competence.  Thanks for this post, Norma.  A
