Pay-it-Forward - Client soon to be Homeless

One of my San Jose Short Sales clients called me saying "I need your help." He is currently living on unemployment income. He applied for low income housing and needed me to write a letter stating that his home is being sold as a short sale and that he will not receive any proceeds from the sale. Time was of the essence as he did not want to miss out on the opportunity to get the apartment at low-income rents. There are only so many units available and he needs one.

I stopped what I was doing and wrote the letter. Not a big deal really. It took me about one hour of my time ... and I am always happy to do whatever I can to help anyone ... most especially my clients.

Then I got the call.

It was from the administrator of the program asking for my fax number ... I need to fill out their F O R M!

I explained that all of the information they need is in my letter. Yes, but we need you to fill out OUR FORM.

What else can we expect from any program where the government is involved ... or a lender for that matter. We walk through fire with the lender on a short sale why not walk it again with an apartment complex that offers low income housing. After all ... it's for my client who may be homeless soon if he does not secure low income housing. Being in service to others is not always fun and it's not always convenient. I did not like fiilling out their form. However I do appreciate the opportunity to serve others even when it requires me to do something I may not necessarily enjoy.

Taking more time to fill out the form so my client does not become homeless next month when we close escrow on his home is my pay-it-forward this week.

There is no limit to helping others. Double-Dipping is allowed when we are paying-it-forward. I also saw Dan the Safeway Man last night standing out in the rain. For those who follow my pay-it-forward posts ... I made a commitment to always give Dan something when I see him. Last night Dan received the smallest bill in my wallet ... $10.00. Each time I give Dan something it makes me feel good and at the same time, it brings tears to my eyes. It reminds me of how truly blessed I am. Thank you!

I was talking to a client yesterday who works at a local grocery store,  He said it is sad to see so many people show up on the first of every month when their food stamps come out.  They are in such need they can't wait a few days for the lines to go down.

Nancy, Thank you so much. There is so much more to what we do for clients when we are working short sales. I often wonder how I can keep up the pace. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Progressive, Thanks for stopping by. I sometimes feel I may be one of those people in the grocery store. I’ll bet I am working for less than minimum wage on my short sale files. Clearly, I am not doing them for the money!

I am so glad that you could help your client in trying to find a home. There is so much in this business that we do that is not "part of our job".  When you have clients that truly appreciate what you do...that makes it all worthwhile. I am sure something good will come your way because of the good that you do for others.!

Jane, No – the paperwork and the ridiculous back and forth never ends. If only we were paid by the hour!

Rebecca, Thank you. I love the group too. It truly has become a life-changing process. Ironically (or not) my business is on fire. Seems like the more I give out … the more I get back! Thanks for stopping by.

Mary, The good comes in all forms … not always a direct reciprocation … yet it does not need to be because the perpetual cycle of giving and receiving allows for small miracles to happen all around us every day. It’s a blast to participate.

I made a pledge many years ago not to give directly to a homeless person. Instead I donate to homeless shelters, battered women and children shelters, and soup kitchens. The reason why is because one of the papers here did an exposé back in 1994 on the homeless here. Some of the homeless were making up to $64,000 a year from standing on the best street corners. And it’s all tax free! Made me want to go stand on a good street corner. For those who truly are homeless and not just working our sympathies, the shelters and kitchens are better.

Great News – my client got the low-income apartment! He and the person who needed the form completed were very thankful.
