Selecting flowers to photograph at Longwood Gardens

Last night, we had severe storm warnings, tornado warnings and flash flood alerts. Very unusual March weather in Montgomery County, Maryland. When we have bad weather, we think about a favorite retreat, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. This is one of our favorite day trip or weekend travel destinations. Longwood gardens is about 127 miles from Kentlands, our home community in Gaithersburg.

The current exhibit in the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens is Orchid Extravaganza. This is an outstanding show and well worth the trip. If you can be in the area, check the schedule of events on their website:  www.longwoodgardens.org

If you have photos from a favorite place, please share them in the comments. If you see a favorite among my pictures, tell me about it.

Roy and Dolores Kelley visited Longwood Gardens on Saturday, February 12. 2011 to see the Orchid Extravaganza in the Conservatory. A wonderful world class exhibit. Canon PowerShot G11 camera. Photograph by Roy Kelley.

Good morning to all. We had a beautiful dawn, after a stormy night, for my walk through Kentlands and Lakelands. Birds are singing, crows are cawing, rabbits are hopping. Spring is near. Life is very good in Maryland.

Roy - these are some of my favorite flowers and ones I have in my garden: lilies, hydrangeas and tulip. I needed some cheering up and your flowers always make me smile and think of my garden that soon will be thriving and I can't wait!

Hi Roy,

Your flower photos are a great way to start the day. The second photo reminds me of growing up in Ohio. We used to love seeing the pom like clusters in shades of purple at our grandmother's house and called them her "snowball flowers"...

To this day, I have fond memories whenever I see hydrangea!

Enjoy the weekend,

Roy,

I'm glad you survived the storms last night. Japan wasn't so lucky. They had the worst earthquake and tsunami ever recorded in history. No matter how stormy life gets we have to be thankful for safety and health for ourselves and friends. There were warnings in Alaska and Hawaii too.

I was up when the news broke out... it's quite a disaster.

Your photos are beautiful. Pray for those impacted overseas.

Hi Roy,

I think my favorite is the lily. My guess is it is some variety of the star gazer. They look similar to mine below.

Thanks to all for coming by. Dolores and I went to the Maryland Home & Garden Show today. The Maryland Orchid society had a wonderful show and sale. A big building full of orchids.

Good Saturday morning, Chris and Linda. I took hundreds of orchid pictures at the Maryland Home and Garden Show on Friday. The Maryland Orchid Society has a major show and sale in progress this weekend.

Hi Roy, I'm really thinking about stopping at Longwood Gardens in May when I drive up to get my son from school. Everytime you post something about it I got a flood of good memories from my childhood.
