Japan is in a crises. Why is Sheppard Smith, from FOX news still there?

Japan is in a crises.  Why is Sheppard Smith, from FOX news still there?

Most news agencies have pulled their reporters.  This situation in Japan is not safe. I, as a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist with 25 experience wrote on Facebook 4 days ago that it was not safe for anyone to be near the power plant.  I don't think it's even safe to be 50 miles away.

The other TV stations have pulled their reporters.  When the US (finally Obama got off the golf course) says that the United States Americans that are in Japan need to come home, and they are sending planes there to retrieve them - that's serious.

The Airplanes that arrived here set off the Geiger counters at the airports.  The people on the airplane also set off the Geiger counters when they arrived.  Obviously, every time the Japanese put water on the fires to cool off the 4 power plants - more radiation is in the air due to the steam.

In my humble opinion, no news story is as important that the life of a reporter.

There are plenty of people over in Japan that have connections to the news media.

Should Sheppard Smith be taking the "SSKI"/Potassium Perchlorate pills, ABSOLUTELY.  Is he being given the information that let's him know how serious the melt down is?  I don't think so.  It's news people.  It's media, it's the FOX news channel wanting people to watch. I used to watch FOX all the time b/c I thought they were "fair and balanced"...but now I wonder, just how much they care about the reporters who work for them. I predicted this melt down last Tuesday...and yes it is happening.  Every time they put water on the over heated isotopes, the steam produces clouds of radioactivity (Many elements with very long half lives.  In other words, If an element like is used for most medical tests - Technetium has a half life of 8 hours...that's short.  The elements that they are producing in Japan have half lives of years!  Many years.  That area where the melt down is occuring will not be habitable for 5 years or more.  The ground is infested, the water is infested and even going into the area should not be allowed for years.

It's amazing that the people who came in and were to rescue people have left.  Yes, the weather is very cold, however, if homes were intact and people had blankets and food to sustain them...this just is not right.  Why do I think they left, because the radiation levels were so high, the rescuees were afraid to stay.

Again, Shep, the story is not worth your life...it's been on Facebook for days... We love you - come home, be safe.

What do you all think about reporters who stay when the US says - COME HOME!

Oh and forget about Coulter's comments...ridiculous.

Sheppard Smith's life is more important than a story.  If he gets an award for this in the future, let's just hope he is here to receive it.

Shep, you have many fans and we want you here to give us the news for many more years to come......Come home!

SaraMana,

Do you know that he is there voluntarily.  Do you know that he is being given correct information?

I have not doubt that you are an ex-paratrooper who was trained to hunt down and kill...that comes through sometimes on your posts, however, I am a 25 year experienced person who has a degree in Nuclear Medicine. Every other TV station has pulled their reporters.

I don't think it matters how old one is, it's getting appropriate information. I know that everytime they put water on those rods...more radiation is in the air and it is making the situation worse. Unless they figure out how to cool them down, there is going to be a lot of death and destruction.

Do you have any experience in the Nuclear Physics field?

Would like your input.  There are too many different opinions, Why? These so called experienced Nuclear Physicists have not done anything but teach, they have not been in the field...It's very scary in my humble opinion, that there are so many opposing opinions.

I predicted this debacle last Tuesday.

Ron.

It's good that it's cold, otherwise the stench from the death there would be overwhelming.

My prayers are with those people living in shelters...Very little food and non-sanitary conditions,

Linda,

Thank yo so much for your carring attitude.  More people should feel the pain, as you do for these people.   It really makes me sick...I feel so sorry for the people living in the shelters and the losses that they have!

Come on "Sara", you don't think that FOX has anything to do with this?'

I'm sure this is not a topic that he has total knowledge about. He is highly educated and he is a great reporter. Nuclear issues are not something that people understand for the most part.

How do you know that he "did not have to go there"?  Does he make his own decisions or does FOX news control that?

I appreciate your opinion.  Why would you say that I don't love your opinions and like the conversation. You are one of my favorite commentators... At least you have an opinion that makes sense.

Just wondering...does Sheppard Smith have an option?

You are certainly not wasting my time.  I appreciate your opinions.

Isn't that the point of blogging...everyone has an opinion and I do SO, RESPECT YOURS!

Do you have a real name?

Gary,

We've been active on Facebook trying to reach out to him...The issue we are trying to figure out is - since all the other TV stations pulled out their top line reporters...why is he still there?

I guess he thinks he's far enough away to be safe.

Not sure if he is married or not, but if I was family, I would want him back safely in the USA. Just MHO.

I'm just not sure why he's not getting the info that it's not safe there...You have a clue?

Its so sad, I realize it was serious, but when you explain it, it just seems very severe.  So that area can not be touched for years now?  and can the fumes travel to America like there saying?

Karen,

I respect your opinion and expertise on the subject. I pray the information you provided reaches Sheppard Smith before it's too late. This is pure tragedy and the worst catostrophic news imaginable. The highest level of humanitarian efforts needs to come from around the globe. Fox News should bring Sheppard Smith home immediately.

Karen, I'd like to see you get recognition for your article and efforts to save the people. In my opinion, if you could reach out to Sheppard and get to the ears of the people with authority, I'm in hopes you get a Pulitzer Prize or some other kind of notable recognition. I know that was never your intention, but what you said hit me like a brick on my head and I'm paying attention!

Respectfully yours,

Patricia

Tiffany,

It is very serious. It amazes me that there are so many contradictory opinions by other people that should know better, or if they don't know the answers, stay off the news channels.

Patricia,

Thank you so much, that's very humbling.

Since Shep is not reporting today, hopefully, he is on his way home and out of there.  I do not believe the Japanese people even know.  This is going to be a huge mess.

My college roommate was a reporter.  All I can say, though   I adored my roommate, is that reporters march to a different drummer than most of us.  When it comes to a news breaking story, they lose all perspective of safety, courtesy, logic, or rationality.  It may not be the network but reporter blood cursing un ovedrive!

What do you think about the reports of "low levels" of cesium 137 now detected in Orlando according to the EPA.  (Have you been checking the EPA's radiation air monitoring site results?)

Also, interestingly, how could Orlando get radiation and yet Tampa's readings say "none detected."

(The radiation from Japan blows in from the Jet Stream to the east, meaning it would pass Tampa before it got to Orlando, so that doesn't make sense if none is detected in Tampa.)

Also, do you know of any independent air monitoring going on in Florida?  Have you noticed the haze in the air and over the water or the sulfur odor in the air?

I don't believe that the levels of Cs-137 make any sense in Orlando.

I don't know of any independent air monitoring in Florida.

I have not noticed the haze.  The Sulfur odor either.  Sulfur smell is in Chinese drywall however.

I do not think that Florida will be affected by what has happened in Japan at this point in time.

Hello

The Environmental Protection Agency's radiation air monitors have picked up Cesium 137 and Iodine 131 in Florida which apparently is from Japan.  Thankfully, the monitors are detecting very low levels in Florida!

For your reference, here is the link to EPA's website:

http://www.epa.gov/radiation/rert/radnet-sampling-data.html

Even as far away as Vermont has detected the Cesium 137 in their milk at very low levels.  It's all very odd.

Hello Jan,

That is strainge.  I-131 has an 8 day half life, so say a thyroid patient was given 100 MCi's (millicuries) to treat a small thyroid cancer, it would be 50 mCi's 8 days later.

As for the Sulfur smell you described, I smelled it today driving from the 17th street Causeway in South Broward toward my office which is just south of Pompano Beach on the A1A.

Just FYI, radiation is a colorless, odorless material, so because you smelled sulfur, it is not likely radiation.

Sorry, I still do not believe we are picking up any radiation as a result of Japan's meltdown.

It be coming in on airplanes, or people's luggage, etc - but it wouldn't make it this far and still be detectible.

Hello

Hi! Just a quick and last post. I've been researching it all day and yes, the radiation is from Japan and has been found all the way in Iceland and Europe, as it flows along the jet stream winds.

Here is an article from the Herald Tribune that says the radiation is from Japan:

http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20110329/WIRE/110329385/-1/opinion09?Title=Traces-of-Japan-radiation-detected-in-Florida

I guess the only thing we can do is keep abreast of the situation and take good care of ourselves.

Best regards.

Hello...

I don't know who you are, however, what I suggest to you is to stop reading what the news people say.  They have no idea what they are reporting,  These are reporters just going on what they can get.  It's just like the people that were reporting that there were no issues while Shep. Smith was over there still reporting and the next day, Japan was in a crises.

I know what is going on and there is no way that we are receiving "reportable" radiation levels from Japan.

I worked in Nuclear Medicine for 25 years, I monitored the Radiation levels from the 3 Mile Island melt down.

You are getting and believing wrong information.

There is no way that radiation levels from Japan are here.  If they were I would worry, and I'm not.

So as a person who understands Radiation and the half lives of the radiation in Japan, don't worry...

If there is a reason to worry here I will be writing a post about it.

Face it, we are so far away from Japan - come on..what you are reading is just rediculous.

If you let me know who you are, if I thought there was a reason to be concerned, I would tell you.

You can always email me.  Karenluvs2listnsellre@yahoo.com
