Don't Be Fooled By The Unemployment Numbers

I do not think the unemployment numbers are actually indicative of the true situation in this country. I believe our politicans do not want us to know the actual numbers.

The unemployment numbers are meaningless. Supposedly they are declining. Don't believe it.

They can publish any number they want. They can say we have 5% unemployment - wouldn't make it so.

In many markets, such as South Florida, the unemployment is still somewhere between 16-20%. In California, it's over 20%. Nationally, when underemploymed and those no longer looking for work are counted, the rate is nearly double the published figure at 16.6%. Labor force participation is now below 60%.

The "official" unemploymnet rate is based only on people looking for work within the month (4-weeks) preceeding the report. Anyone looking for more hours, a part-time job, or sitting it out, is not counted.

Any of us in real estate or home building - or anyone else self-employed - that stops working or can't produce an income for a brief or extended period of time. we are not counted either. Add in this number and unemployment is going to be considerably more than 20%.

When you flatten out the employment curve since 2000, the number of people employed today versus 11 years ago is about the same - actiually slightly lower today. We have had some intermittent increases but effectively no net employment growth in 11 years.

Then add in daily increasing gas prices along with increases in food and clothing - to a depressed employment condition - and its easy to see why they want us to think things are better than they are and why we have many challenges in making sales - depending on the specific market.

And before we all start looking to the federal government to create jobs - or believing their promises that they can - remember that the government cannot create a job. They can just pay for it. A job must sustain itself through the value it adds to the company to be able to produce more sales to continue justifying it.

If people are unemployed and the cost of living is going up drastically(gas, food, and clothing) why indicate thing are getting better?  We have a government and a press that is in denial.  The economy is about to go into a double dip and we have the town criers saying that everything is fine.

I agree, I am skeptical of the unemployment numbers that the goverment is puting out. It appears to be higher than what we are led to believe.

Kevin,

Thanks for the reblog. The President keeps telling us how the economy is improving so the numbers have to reflect this. :)

Tim,

Good observations. The reality doesn't match the hype. :)

James,

Much higher, and they don't paint a very comprehensive picture. :)
