Would you be okay with a Walmart in your back yard?

The residence of Marysville may be caught off guard to find that there are plans to build a new Walmart Super Center near them. The company has recently revisited the city and are currently going through the permit process to continue development at this site. Now there are two other Walmarts within a 5 mile radius and may pose some traffice problems. What would you do if there was a 183,000 square foot superstore next door to you?

Well, for starters, I would wonder why planning and zoning would allow commercial development in a residential area....

There are major restrictions in Silicon Valley for developing sites with big box retailers.  Wal-Mart already has 3 stores in Silicon Valley and I doubt they'd be allowed to open another one.

Janna, You would think that was something discussed? The problem is the property sits ajacent to a highway leading into the city the superstore would be backed up to newer homes.

We had this exact thing happen right in front of our neighborhood where homes are in the $250,000-$600,000 range.  A large area of land in front of the subdivision was supposed to be a professional center designed as a "campus-like" setting...offered only to professionals, banking institutions, small offices, etc....at least that's how it was marketed when pre-construction homes sales were happening.  WalMart snuck in, under the radar, and has now built a Super Center that has brought crime, excess traffic and other unsavory "elements" to the point where local police now have a portable watch tower established in the parking lot.  It's a sad day when local municipalities are more interested in taking care of big corporations, rather than its citizens.  Several communities have fought WalMart moving into their neighborhood...and won.  We just got started toooooo late.  Wish we'd known sooner!

Michelle, that's what I was thinking. I think the citizens should be aware! Not everyone pays attention to the local news and the various type of mediums out there. Thank you.

Sham, I think you could be right in a way but we'll have to wait and see. Thank you for your advice also.

Years ago, my "Conspiracy Theory Right Wing Friends" would say that Walmart rules the world.

They preached that when the American Economy completely collapses, Walmart will become the "State Store", where you will be forced to shop.

Scary thing is, their predictions appear to be getting closer to Reality every day.

I think Walmart's goal is to have a superstore in every city in America. Although scary, I've heard the same that Fred #7 wrote.

I have mixed feelings on the issue. I can see pros and cons on both sides.

When you say next door are you saying that they are mixing residential and commercial.  If not they are great stores.

Tim, yes they would boarder a single family residential area of newer homes.

...they want the PROPERTY and SALES TAX INCOME.....If the other stores are in OTHER jurisdictions, those revenues are not coming to them.....WalMart is a good neighbor * it provides JOBS and TAX REVENUE
