Old Manassas Railroad Depot Pictures

Built in 1904 the Manassas Railroad Depot has been serving commuters to Washington, DC ever since. The three black and white photos in the collage are representative of many others currently hanging in the waiting rooms. The fourth is a photo I took of the old telegrapher's office that has been restored

A fire in 1912 destroyed the entire building which was rebuilt on the original foundation in 1914.

The station was restored to its' original condition in 1997. Although I have not inquired I suspect the two waiting rooms were there as a result of segregation in Southern states. One of them is now the offices of Historic Manassas - the marketing arm of the Old Town Manassas district which is a major tourist and commercial area.

Antique mailbox in Manassas

The authenticity of the restoration even extends to the antique mailbox outside which is still in service.

When compared to the black and white photo above the first photo below attests to the great care that was taken in the restoration.

Although freight trains rumble through and Amtrak trains either stop or pass through the station's primary user is the Virginia Railway Express commuter service.

The depot is very popular with tourists, most especially railroad buffs.

Karen,

Beautiful; I really enjoy local history. The restoration of depots is very popular. Manassas has done a wonderful job.

Hi Karen, enjoyed your account of the train station at Manassas, and your photos as well.  I'm sure we will be hearing more about the railroad junction there as we get closer to July and the  sesquicentennial of the first battle fought there in the Civil War.

Hi Karen, What a wonderful restoration job!  Our Tomball Railroad depot was restored also but it just resides beside the track as passanger trains are pretty much a thing of the past here in the west.

Karen, it's good that communities are striving to preserve their old buildings and with it their heritage.  I wonder how many people have to take a second look at the mailbox before they post their letter in it just to make sure it indeed is still an active collection point?

I’ve never seen a mailbox like that. Does that mean I’m still young?
