Hello Summer! Summer Camp for Children with Differences

Summer camp is just around the corner so I think it’s a perfect time to talk about a fun, summer camp that has been specifically created for children with disabilities.  In Sibley, Louisiana (between Monroe and Ruston) sits a 33-acre acclaimed wooded paradise called Camp Alabama. Throughout each week of the summer, MedCamps of Louisiana holds a series of exciting camps which are free of charge to children who have a variety of mental and physical disabilities. These disabilities include: anemia, arthritis, autism, asthma, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, hearing impairment, sickle cell anemia, speech impairment, spina bifida, visual impairment and also those that are developmentally disabled.

You can imagine how hard it might be for a child with special needs to get the attention he/she needs at ordinary camps so MedCamps has put together a camp that gives each child the chance to have a blast, being around others they can relate to. What’s cool about MedCamps is that each week is focused on a different disability so the appropriate staff, medical assistance and tailored activities are available. The mission of MedCamp is to allow the campers to focus on what they can do instead of what they cannot. This alone helps create a sense of self-worth, belonging and accomplishment.

Parents can feel safe knowing that their children are in the hands of professional, trained counselors...not to mention Camp Alabama’s accommodations are suited just for those with special needs. Camp Alabama has a beautiful lake with paddle boats, canoes and  scenic trails. The activities that Camp Alabama offers are: arts and crafts, softball, archery, music, canoeing, drama, fishing, swimming and more.
