Opportunity Is Self Made!

"I had to make my own living and my own opportunity! But I made it! Don't sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them!"

-Madam C.J. Walker, creator of beauty products.

I had never heard of Madam C.J. Walker and boy, have I been missing out! While reading her biography, this week, I learned that not only she was the first female self-made millionaire but she was born in 1867 of parents who were slaves! She made things happen for herself and her family. After reading her life story, I found it absolutely amazing how true this quote is.

That is actually why I have been missing the Rain, a little. I have been very busy. Maybe I should say, I have been harvesting the fruits of all my labor. I didn't just sit down, over the winter. I didn't wait up for an opportunity to knock on my door. I went out there and knock on doors! Many didn't open. A few did. And now, I need to learn to get up 1 hour before my regular time, if I want to make everything happen in a day. It is a fantastic feeling!

I got to go! Today, I have 2 classes to attend. I have to call a few clients. Tomorrow, home inspection and couple of showings. But first, workout time! This is what I have been "working" for! And it feels good!

I had never heard of her either.  First self made female millionaire is impressive enough, but child of slaves?  Wow!

Greetings, Ms. Dickinson,

What a pleasure to learn that you were inspired by Madam C. J. Walker's life. You are so right that "opportunity is self made." As Walker's great-great-granddaughter and biographer, I'm always delighted when new people discover her. Today our family is proud to keep her legacy alive through the Walker Theatre Center (a National Historic Landmark in Indianapolis), our books, our support of successful entrepreneurs and our Madam Walker Family Archives (the largest private collection of Walker photographs, business records, clothing, furniture and memoribilia.)

I hope you and your readers will visit us at www.madamcjwalker.com, www.aleliabundles.com and www.madamwalkerfamilyarchives.wordpress.com.
