Melinda Peterson's Adventures in Washington DC - Day 3

Silence is GoldenMelinda Peterson's Adventures in Washington DC - Day 3.  Political meetings were on the agenda today... starting with briefings at 7am and ending with meetings at the Capitol with our local Senators.  The talking points were clearly defined and several 'spokesmen' were chosen for presenting each topic (Mortgage Interest Deduction, QRM, Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac Reform, Short Sale Legislation, etc.).  Someone in the crowd volunteered my name to be a spokesperson, but I quickly motioned that 'My Lips Are Sealed' today.  Uncommon for this girl, as I'm usually never shy about speaking and rarely do I lack something to say.

I chose to be a silent observer in the room.  No axes to grind, no statements to make, no jockeying for position, just plain silence.  Listening skills heighten when you're silent.  You learn things that you might otherwise miss in a room with a view.  Silence is not a passive act as some people may think.  It can be purposeful and deliberate.

Such was the case today.  Much of what I observe daily passes through a filter in my head.  I think, I process, I sleep on it, I think some more and then I act.  For me, it's a strange dichotomy.  Most people would define my personality as a free spirit.  No argument there.  But, what they don't always see is my filter.  The side that processes my passion for caring deeply about issues that negatively affect others.  I am moved by personal experiences and I like to hear 'the rest of the story.'  Sometimes, silence is the path I take to get there.

There you go backing up my husband's theory that I can yell at him without opening my mouth.

Melinda, it's also a good way to conserve lipstick, I would suppose.

Melinda listening is a skill, one that others need to learn one that you thankfully have as a skill.  It is indeed a good method to getting to a decision.  Love it.

Silence truly can be golden, but I think if I was within hearing distance of a legislator, I would have a lot to say!
