As a Stager I can only do so much.

By
Home Stager with Janice Ankrett Home Staging

I've come to realize that as a Stager I can only do so much.

My job requires me to be a problem solver. If there is an issue, I do my best to work out an answer for my client. But there are things I can't change.

I had a client that was really overwhelmed by the thought of selling her home. She ran a business in her home and was terrified of her clients finding out she was moving.

You see, she and her family were moving to another city. She felt if her clients found out they would leave her right away. This frightened her. Her business had saved the family when her husband lost his job. Now she would have to trust that this new job would last, that the upheaval would be worth it.

She didn't want to make the changes I suggested because her clients might catch on; her husband wasn't always there to help but most of all I think it meant it was all really happening. She was going to have to take that leap of faith.

I can make suggestions, fine tuning them to her needs but I can't guarantee a happy ending.

There's only so much a Stager can do.

When she's ready, I'll be there.

Janice, everybody has different motivations, and fear can be a very powerful one. When the time comes, sge might be more ready to listen to and act on your suggestions.

Kristine, that's so true!

I hope so Connie. There are a lot of 'what ifs' in her situation.

Malcolm, I hope she does act on my suggestions when the time arrives. It will help the selling process.

Hi Janice,

It is one of these objections we come accross from time to time, and we always discuss the various options with them, one of which is to ensure that there is a fall back, a replacement, and or different place of business to operate from, while the property is for sale, (chartered office, rented space, referrals to local collegues) if the move is going to happen, going into hiding is not the way to approach a solution.... but if the move is iffy to begin with, it is time to go back to the drawing board and decide what the real reasons for the move (or not to move) are.

Always fun to solve little challenges.... but you are the best, and will find a pfanntastic way for you and your clients...

Thank you Pfanns. I have worked with their Realtor for many years now. I know they are in good hands. She just has to decide 'ok this is happening and it's happening now ... time to make the changes'. I have theory that once they find /commit to the new house things will move rapidly.

Hi Janice--I so agree with you and don't know how many times I have said that same thing.  We can understand the client's situation, we can be supportive, but we can't force them to do something they are not yet ready to do.  And I love how you say you will be there when she's ready.

Janice,

You can only do so much. People need to be ready to make the hard choices.

I think you have done the right thing ... suggest, support and stand back and wait for the right time.

Good Luck hope you get the project in the end.

Very true Shar. We meet people who often need more than the basics of staging.

That's a good way of putting it Anna.

I hope so Sandi. The changes will help sell her home.

Thanks Liz.

What are her clients going to think about having a "For Sale" sign in her yard? That sends a much bigger signal than making any changes you suggest. You could also explain to her that if her clients are happy then she should be honest and open with them about her move. If she hides this from them, she stands a much greater chance of losing those customers once they fell they have been lied to. Home Inspectors In NJ

John, You are right. I would think she has an issue about a sign too. Fear does strange things to people.

Nice post Janice.  You're right!  If sellers don't listen or wont because of one reason or another, you can't do much more but be there when they hopefully will!

Sad story, I can imagine the angst the seller is feeling and the frustration for you that your advice isn't heeded.

So true1 I also don't think it's fair to a stager to do a partial staging because the sellers don't want to spend the money and then they balk at what they get for the money they spend. Your job is not an easy one and neither is the Realtor's who is working with this type of client. Hopefully it doesn't happen too often.
