No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.

No good deed goes unpunished. But sometimes you have to wonder why bother doing a good deed. I just finished a home inspection and the buyers agent stopped by just as I was wrapping up with the buyer client. She asked if there were any major issues. There really weren't any major issues, but I mentioned a concern with the furnace. The furnace was a Lennox model with an odd double filter. It was clear the homeowner were not aware of the second filter since it was over 1/2" thick with dust and dirt. It was not visible from the filter door area. The other filter was installed the wrong direction so the air was only hitting half the filter.

The interior of the home was immaculate, obviously the woman took great pride in her home. But she had to be cleaning her house every single day to keep it looking as nice as it did based on the condition of the filters. So as a gesture of goodwill and information to help her realize what her filter looked like and so she doesn't have to clean her house so often, we left her a nice written note explaining the fact there was another filter she was not aware of and that it was in need of changing. That's it, nothing more.

I was at the agency office the following day and ran into the agent. She had received a call from the homeowner who was very disturbed that we were implying that she was not a good housekeeper. How dare we tell her when she should do maintenence on her furnace. Really? She acted like we took out a billboard with her name and address on the busiest street screaming to the world that she has the dirtiest house in the world.

Lesson learned? Not really. I think we acted in her best interest and I will do it again on my next inspection because it's just the right thing to do.

Loved the title.  Do not be troubled, you definitely did a good thing.  Sometimes I like to think when something like that happens to me, I just happened to catch someone on a bad day, and not really think about it much. Thanks for sharing!

Peter, Manuel, Thanks, I know we did the right thing, maybe it was the stress of someone poking around her perfect house. Come to think of it, did I put my boot covers on after I crawled around the crawl space?

Scott, she was embarrassed.  And, I have seen that before with people with immaculate homes.  Point something, anything, out, and they will respond like this.  They take great pride in the presentation, and she probably does clean everyday.  But, so do we.

Thanks Don, I'm not sure my house ever was that clean, maybe in my dreams.

Scott, your intentions were good, just not received well. Homeowners may not always be aware of how some of the mechanicals in their house operate. Keep it up. The next person will appreciate it.
