Lucca, Italy

Five years ago, when my wife and I were in Italy, one of the cities we visited was the ancient city of Lucca, which is in the Tuscany region. Lucca was founded by the Etruscans and became a colony of the Romans way back in 180 BC. One feature of Lucca, that lets you know it is ancient, is the moat and the wall around it.

Lucca was a very pretty and historically interesting city. On the day that we were leaving Lucca -- an ill-fated train ride that ended with the train going five miles and then all the railway workers going out on strike leaving us stranded in a foreign land at a bend in the track -- there were hot air balloons floating around the city. I only managed to get a shot of one, but there were several floating about on a Sunday morning. My wife and I are going back to Tuscany, the end of this year for her birthday. Not sure if we will make it back to Lucca or try new adventures.  So far, the only two cities in Italy we have gone back to are Taormina on Sicily and Verona on the mainland.

I was in Italy last year at this time and I loved it.  I did not get to visit Lucca however and really wish I had gotten there.  When I return, Lucca will be on my list to visit.  If you are going to Tuscany and haven't been to Florence yet, make sure you get there.  I loved Florence!  And if you can go to Montalcino, it's beautiful.  We stayed at the Bamfi Castle and took a wine tour from there to several of the local wineries.  It was incredible!  Can't wait to return to Bamfi!

Such a pretty moat. It looks like it could hold a whole lot more water... correct me if I am wrong.

I visited Taormina in my Navy days, 1984 I think.  Very scenic place!

Congrats on your impending crossing of the million point threshold!
