The Ban: One More Nail In The Coffin For Print Advertising

Vintage Phone Book AdPrint advertising is dead, or at least on it's deathbed. San Francisco's Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 to pass legislation restricting the delivery of phone books to only those folks requesting a copy. The legislation will face a customary second reading next week of which is expected to pass making San Francisco the first government in the nation to ban unrequested delivery of what amounts to fireplace kindling!

Print Advertising For Real Estate Marketing Is Dead Also
As a real estate company we do not do print advertising and our clients know this up front. During a listing presentation we inform the client that print advertising is for real estate agents who are not abreast of current technology to market their home. We simply have the client Google, "Does Print Advertising Work To Sell A Home" and there is more than enough information written to support our point.

But, But, But What About Packing Material?
Currently, we use our phone books for packing material. What the heck am I gonna do when they ban phone books in our area? Yikes! I guess I'll go to plan B, using our local rag (newspaper), which is also on it's way out.

I no longer pick up the yellow page books from our local post office...they ones delivered to my office go to the dumpster and don't even make it INTO my office

I do think phonebooks are waste, but passing regulations on their distribution is a waste, too.

I don't think print advertising is only for out-of-touch agents. I have printed materials I regularly hand out and most of the time people asked for it!!!

Joe - pretty soon, with the disappearance of print and changing laws, we will have to go back to the old tried and true packing material, popped popcorn (no butter of course).

@Alison,

Printed material vs print advertising are two separate issues.  We use printed material all the time, but we do not use print advertising.
