Wow, what a moving post on what memorial day is, and why we celebrate the day.  Many of us look at it as a day off, forgetting those that we are remembering...  Great post.

Memorial Day At the National Cemetary

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary

This weekend is a national holiday set aside for us to pay tribute to those that have given so selflessly of their own lives for the preservation of our safety, our peace and the very freedoms we enjoy today. Freedom is NOT Free and to those that gave all in its preservation, we owe a special homage of respect and reverence. It is this day that is set aside for remembrance and we should each to the extent of our abilities honor these men and women.

I have always been moved when I visit our national cemetery and to see the vast numbers of grave sites of our fallen heroes. Each is marked with a flag placed carefully 12 inches on center of the marker and standing straight and true. I know this from my days of being a scout and arriving before dawn on the morning of Memorial Day to hand place hundreds of these flags.

To this day, when I see these gravesite flags in our national cemetery, I get goose flesh at the stunning beauty of all these flags while knowing all to well that there is a brave person buried beneath each one of them that gave all there was to give.

I hope all of you in my ActiveRain family will to the extent you can, honor those this day as a part of the reverence we have to our land and our country, that we all love so much. Let us each set aside at the very least a moment to honor and remember them.

I would like to share with you these photos that I took last memorial day that will give you at least a glimpse of my moving experience there.

We Honor Them and Will Remember Them Always!

These Flags fly over the Missing In Action section of the cemetary and the American flag was especially beautiful as the sun backlite it giving a special and significant vibrancy.

Good Morning Chris, I was on my iPad last night when I saw that you had re-blogged this and I wanted to reach out and thank you for that. Sadly, commenting or editing our posts from the iPad does not work without a particular app that instead gives us access to our desktop computer remotely. I have tried every work around I know of with no success.

Back to the post, I am most appreciative that you embraced the idea behind these photos of the original purpose for the designated holiday. I don't know if you have visited one of these national cemeteries before but I can tell you that walking the grounds, you can feel the pride and the quiet peacefulness that overtakes our very presence.

When I was in DC, usually on a Saturday morning, I would visit Arlington and it moved me  greatly and oddly was inspiring to me at the same time. That our country while paying whatever price for our freedom, enshrines it's Fallen as a reminder that the prices is never fully paid, that future heroes will also have to pay the price to sustain our freedom. Sobering and yet inspiring that we will have those heroes when they are needed.

Thank  you so much for the re-blog, very much appreciated.
