Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 11, 2011 so that you don’t miss the 9th Annual Back to the Chattahoochee River Race and Festival. The festival begins at 10:00 a.m. and provides free entertainment for the entire family. The festival takes place at Riverside Park in Roswell, meaning kids can play in the extremely popular and fun spray garden. In addition to these wacky ways to get wet, attendees will enjoy live music, face painting, balloon artists and other family-friendly activities. Different vendors will be on hand providing food and refreshments. The festival concludes at 2:00 p.m.

Anyone can attend the festival at Riverside Park, but the best way to get there is by participating in the race down the Chattahoochee. The race course begins at Garrard Landing Park on Holcomb Bridge Road at 9:00 a.m. It includes open and recreational categories, various age divisions, solo and tandem canoe divisions, kayak and sea kayak divisions and new this year, stand up paddle board divisions. Paddlers wanting a competitive race will traverse the 10-mile course, while recreational paddlers will take the eight-mile course. Both include exciting Class I-II rapids. The awards ceremony for the race will take place at the festival.

If you need even more incentive to partake in the race, then allow SweetWater Brewery to sweeten the deal. Paddlers will be greeted at the end of the course by the SweetWater Beer Barge. Paddlers can enjoy sodas, water, or a SweetWater brew (for patrons 21 and over carrying a valid ID) before going ashore.

Advanced registration is available through June 7 for the fee of $40 for solo boats and $60 for tandem boats. After June 7, on-site registration costs are $50 for solo and $70 for tandem boats and will be available based on capacity. All registered paddlers will receive a gift bag, a race T-shirt, a boxed lunch, and a one-year membership in Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.Proceeds go to support UCR’s mission to protect and preserve the Chattahoochee River system for the people and wildlife that depend upon it.
